WeatherCat and WeatherCatPad are in Hospice
« on: June 30, 2023, 02:36:11 PM »
Apple notified me today that WeatherCat and WeatherCatPad will be withdrawn from the Apple Store in 60 days. They are doing this because the 2 apps have not been updated in 3 years and do not meet the minimum sales threshold. If you purchased either app before it is withdrawn from the store, you will still be able to download the app after it is withdrawn. You will be able to use WeatherCat and WeatherCatPad until Apple makes an iOS or padOS update that makes them unusable. This is a rare occurrence, but still possible.

I am going to let this hospice happen for a number of reasons: (1) Both apps are written in Objective-C, Apple's original development language. I have spent the last 3 years learning and writing in Swift, Apple's new development language and don't plan to return to Objective-C. (2) The revenue from both sales is not enough to buy me the coffee required to keep me alert during the update process. (3) I am traveling on an extended vacation and do not have the tools I need to make any changes to existing apps.

I will continue to monitor the WeatherCat Forum and help iOS, padOS, and tvOS users whenever possible. Many thanks to all the WeatherCat and WeatherCatPad users for your support and loyalty.

Grand:

Thanks for the update, although I am truly sorry that:
  • Apple is giving you the boot
  • You haven't become independently wealthy from iPhone and iPad app sales
I have loved using these apps and appreciate your TLC over the years as we ran into little issues here and there.

Enjoy your vacation!
Blick

Thanks Grand for the update,

Sorry to hear that these applications haven't been the boon that you hoped they might be.  Like Blick, I have enjoyed them greatly.

Thanks for your efforts in supporting the WeatherCat community.

WeatherCat for iOS was working up until this past week after I installed the latest 18.1 Release Candidate. Hmmmm.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll check it out after I've done the iOS 18.1 update later this week.

Not being a software genius (rather the reverse) I did the the latest Weathercat update for MacOS last week. I haven’t made any changes on my iPad so don’t understand why WeathercatPad has stopped working. I’m on iPad OS 17.2.1 As stated by the GPB in theory the software should still be working unless Apple make a change to iPad OS, which for me hasn’t occured . The problem is that the app is constantly reporting that it is searching local network for weathercatPad and not finding it. So is there any fix that i can try. It’s all a shame as Weathercat was the app that i chose when first entering the world of personal weather stations, as opposed to Davis Weatherlink and have used it non stop ever since. HELP!!

No problem with Weathercat on the Mac and no problem with data reporting out to Wunderground. Problem I have sounds the same as yours, WeatherCat on the iPhone and iPad stopped working after installing the release version of iOS and iPadOS 18.1.

Issues on the MacOS side? (Re: WeatherCat and WeatherCatPad are in Hospice)

Dear acw342, ColdnFrosty, Grand, and WeatherCat Mac and iOS users,

Not being a software genius (rather the reverse) I did the the latest Weathercat update for MacOS last week. I haven’t made any changes on my iPad so don’t understand why WeathercatPad has stopped working. I’m on iPad OS 17.2.1
. . . .

I'm still all the way back on MacOS 10.14 Mojave so I cannot comment on upgrades to MacOS.  However WeatherCatPad works fine for me.  Anyone else seeing issues that have both running?

I am on MacOS 15.1 Sequoia, but not sure why that would matter since WeatherCat is running fine - but maybe it does.

Bonjour apparently also in Hospice. (Re: WeatherCat and WeatherCatPad)

Dear ColdnFrosty, acw342, and WeatherCat troubleshooters,

I am on MacOS 15.1 Sequoia, but not sure why that would matter since WeatherCat is running fine - but maybe it does.

Since MacOS 15 appeared to be the point when things broke, I decided to do some web searches.   It didn't take me long to find this:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250488925?sortBy=rank

Apparently, Apple is giving up on its own Bonjour technology.  However, you can still turn it back on using these instructions:

https://docs.qnap.com/operating-system/qts/4.5.x/en-us/GUID-55D88E3A-B898-41E7-8C32-AE71666C9ED2.html

Let us know if that solves the problem.

Well, WeatherCat for iOS seems to be working now. I checked my router and found that I still had Port Forwarding set to 49250-49254. I changed this to 49250-49255 then shut off the Mac and rebooted the router. I restarted the Mac, rebooted the iPhone and voila, the iOS client started working again.Likewise with WeatherCat for the iPad. So that appears to be the only change that was required to getting it to work again.

Edourd, thanks for that info, however I have a problem in that I don’t understand the term “Control Panel”. On the undersanding that it might have meant syste preferences i can’t find anything relating to Network & File saervices.Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. (I’ve just had a “technician” from my ISP try to tell me that my router URL was a third party web site!!!)

The final release of 18.1 came out today and still a no go on both the iOS and iPadOS versions.

I found that if I removed WeatherCatRCP from the background and restarted the WeatherCatRCP app, it worked fine on iOS 18.1.
