Weather Cat/Davis Envoy on Big Sur
« on: February 22, 2021, 09:38:03 PM »
If there is a better place to post this, please let me know (and I apologize).
Weather Cat was working just fine on Catalina, but is now having a problem on my desktop system, where I just installed Big Sur. It sort of acts as though my Davis Envoy has died (or maybe the USB interface).  That is, it isn't recording any data, either indoor or outdoor.  On the other hand, when I tried installing Weather Cat on my laptop (still running Mojave) as a test, it paused for a second for two at the "checking connection to Davis Envoy) and then continued on with no error message. I would have expected it to have generated an error message if it couldn't contact the USB port on the Envoy.  I know the wether station is good (data flowing to the console).  So, I'd like to suspect the Envoy, but it seems like too much of a coincidence for it to have died simultaneously with installing Big Sur.

Comments anyone?

Dear wrw and WeatherCat troubleshooters,

If there is a better place to post this, please let me know (and I apologize).

No worries.  I just moved your topic to Weather General Discussion since that's probably the best fit.

Weather Cat was working just fine on Catalina, but is now having a problem on my desktop system, where I just installed Big Sur.

Unfortunately, Apple hasn't done a particularly good job finalizing Big Sur before release.  Many of the software products I use are releasing updates with the explicit mention of work arounds for Big Sur.  WeatherCat is no exception.

It sort of acts as though my Davis Envoy has died (or maybe the USB interface).  That is, it isn't recording any data, either indoor or outdoor.

This problem is because the Silicon Lab driver you need has been updated for Big Sur.  Until you update the driver, you won't be able to connect to your Davis station.  The download information is still the same as mentioned on the WeatherCat Wiki:

There has been a fair amount of discussion on this topic.  You can find information on these two forum threads:

and

In addition to the driver update, you will need to update to the latest version of WeatherCat as announced here:

Users are reporting that WeatherCat runs properly on Davis stations under Big Sur with these two updates.

Let us know if these upgrades solve your problems or if you need additional assistance.

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]
