Weathercat 2 not opening.
« on: May 17, 2016, 01:23:24 PM »
Greetings All,

For some reason Weathercat 2 gives me a Can't Open message. In my Applications (10.9.5) I see WC1 as an icon and WC2 as a folder. Earlier it wanted to open but could not find my Lacrosse 2300 station because of a serial adapter problem (still have it). Help please.

Irving

What sort of error are you getting? (Re: Weathercat 2 not opening.)

Dear Irving and WeatherCat troubleshooters,

For some reason Weathercat 2 gives me a Can't Open message. In my Applications (10.9.5) I see WC1 as an icon and WC2 as a folder. Earlier it wanted to open but could not find my Lacrosse 2300 station because of a serial adapter problem (still have it). Help please.

Does the error message appear to generated by OS X or by WeatherCat?  Is there any chance you could take a screenshot of the error message so we could see it for ourselves.  The instructions on how to take a screenshot for OS X can be found on Apple Support here:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201361

Once you have a screenshot, you can attach it to a posting using the attachment feature.

Let us know what you come up with.

Cheers, Edouard

So I've been having heinous amounts of trouble with the computer Weathercat is running on.  Last week I had to blow it back a month with Time Machine: I was getting Disk I/O errors that led me to believe that it was actually a corrupted drive.  It had been behaving until this morning, at which point the computer froze.  I rebooted it and it was having disk errors, but now that Weathercat isn't running it's snappy.

Weather cat, for its part, wouldn't open.  I assumed that it had been corrupted so I uninstalled it (app zapper) and reinstalled it, but it still ain't going.  Here's the Console log from a fresh'n'shiny new install of Weathercat, straight off the website:

Need to fix your drive problems (Re: Weathercat 2 not opening.)

Dear slavetothelight and WeatherCat toubleshooters,

So I've been having heinous amounts of trouble with the computer Weathercat is running on.  Last week I had to blow it back a month with Time Machine: I was getting Disk I/O errors that led me to believe that it was actually a corrupted drive.  It had been behaving until this morning, at which point the computer froze.  I rebooted it and it was having disk errors, but now that Weathercat isn't running it's snappy.

It seems clear that you have disk drive errors on the drive that WeatherCat is actually using.  This is clear from this line in the error logs:

5/23/16 1:18:50.000 PM kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error.

At the very least try running disk first aid on the drive in question and see it reports.  When I see errors like this, I rush out and replace the hard drive before I lose everything.  It is definitely time to make sure you have a valid backup.

Sorry, do let us know what you discover.

I would also suggest Diskwarrior only if you can't get Disk Utility to Repair the drive's directory. BTW, neither app will repair the drive unless you boot from another drive.

The only reason to attempt either or both of those apps to Repair the Directory is so you can attempt to create a bootable backup, IF you don't already have one. If you do have one, do not over-write it with a new one. Instead, move directly to "GO", collect your $200, and get a new drive.

Dick drives will fail, it's only a question of when, not if. Your symptoms are classic for disk failure. Repeated "Repairs" are simply dangerous attempts to forestall the inevitable, in my humble opinion. After all, this is why we have multiple backups! ;)

Hi All

Regarding my WC2 not opening, the error message seems to come from the Mac not WC. See attached Grab. Don't know what the -600 means.  Mine is an old iMac running 10.9.5.

Still have not solved my serial adapter problem. Got several emails and error software to run from Plugable but they don't find a solution yet.

Hi Folks,

I wonder if the problem with WC2 not starting is related to these instructions copied below. I did not do this and in reading it now I do not know what the instructions mean regarding replacing one folder with another. Where is the new folder etc?

Still waiting for more help from Plugable on the adapter. As I said, WC1 starts up ok but stops when it cannot find my LaCrosse.

Thanks for any help.  Irving

Upgrading to WeatherCat 2
To upgrade to WeatherCat 2 from WeatherCat 1, quit WeatherCat 1 then replace your existing WeatherCat folder with the new one and launch WeatherCat 2. There will be a short delay on first launch as your weather data is updated to the WeatherCat 2 format; depending on the size of your data set this can take a few minutes.

Can you confirm status of hard drive? (Re: Weathercat 2 not opening.)
Dear Irving, X-Air, Blick, and WeatherCat troubleshooters,

Regarding my WC2 not opening, the error message seems to come from the Mac not WC. See attached Grab. Don't know what the -600 means.  Mine is an old iMac running 10.9.5.

This error might well be caused by the WeatherCat application file being corrupted as a result of your hard drive slowly dying.  Have you run Disk First Aid on the startup disk and confirmed if the drive is working properly or not?

First things first.  You need to verify that you have a stable startup drive before trying to get WeatherCat to work.

Used the Verify Disk on the First Aid and seems to be ok.

Irving:

You should not have the WC1 icon in your applications folder. Rename it to WC1.old or delete it. To run WC2 click on the WeatherCat.app icon inside the WeatherCat2 folder.

many thanks.

It took a long time to get this answer. Have to figure out how to rename it. I do want the files from WC1. Will it be ok?

Yes. Your data files are stored somewhere else. Only applications files are in WC2.

Sigh.

So the OS has already been blown back a month via Time Machine.  The argument was since it's a Mac Mini, which by the way has proprietary firmware and a proprietary connector and therefore cannot get a new HD without the Apple Store being involved, might as well try scraping it back and making a go of it.

And things were fine.

Until I started running Weathercat again.

And now I have Disk I/O errors.

So yeah - hair on fire panic because Disk I/O is bad bad bad.  But no - software was reinstalled one-by-one until the I/O errors started happening again, and the application that caused them to reappear is Weathercat.

Which, by the way, is the one app that won't open anymore either.

Before it crashed and burned, it would also pinwheel the bejeesus out of the computer - as in, it'd sit there hanging, with nothing in the memory pressure, nothing in the CPU usage, but no ability to communicate beyond wiggling the mouse around, until it released.  But if you kill Weathercat the computer responds *fine.*

So I can't say with certainty that Weathercat is the culprit, but I can say with certainty that Weathercat is the one program corrupted enough that it no longer opens.

What more do you want to know?
