Hi Cat Family
So what does Yosemite offer that I need to run and install it?
Is there some kind of new apps or just a new operating system?

thanks for the feed back

I wish I could answer that, Randall. I've been running Yosemite Beta on my 'other than weather station' iMac, from the beginning of the beta program. Seems like a mostly cosmetic upgrade to me, though the sharing through iCloud features have changed a lot. Can't say much about that, because during the beta test, it was not ready for prime time and I couldn't use it.

But the beat goes on. Best to try and keep up, as long as your hardware is up to it. My beta test computer is a 2008 model year and did OK, but seemed to be disk swapping a lot in Yosemite with only 4 GB RAM. It will only support 6 GB, so I added that and, just in case that wasn't enough, put in a 512 GB SSD. The swaps stopped with 6 GB, and the SSD makes it perform better than ever!

As far as Yosemite, I'd say, no hurry. Wait for the servers Apple uses to cool down and then have a go.
Herb

Mostly tighter OS X and iOS integration. (Re: Yosemite)

Hi Randall, Herb, and WeatherCat fans,

So what does Yosemite offer that I need to run and install it?
Is there some kind of new apps or just a new operating system?

As far as I can tell, the biggest chance in Yosemite is that it allows you to interact with any iOS devices you might have.  So if you are working on your computer and your iPhone rings, now you can take the call using your Mac instead of picking up your phone.  There are lots of these sorts of interactions.  That is mostly what I'm seeing on the feature list for Yosemite.  You might have a look at this article from Mac-Life magazine for more information:

http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/50-os-x-yosemite-tips-tricks

In my usual cautious way, I'll keep an eye and eventually upgrade.  The main issue for me is whether or not some of my old utilities might continue to work under Yosemite.  I'm really hoping that the old application launcher MaxMenus will manage to keep going.  I can see that Apple doesn't like hot-corners, but I've been launching applications like that since Now Utilities which goes back to the early 1990s.  If I've been doing something for 25 years, I think Apple has no business teaching this old dog a worthless new trick.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Things I can use in Yosemite:
  • Tight integration between Safari tabs and favorites on my iMac, iPhone and iPad
  • Handoff and Continuity between iOS and OSX (only on hardware that has Bluetooth 4.0)
  • Using iMessages on my iMac for text messages from anyone, not just people with iPhones
  • QuickType
  • Handle phone calls when I am on my iMac from my iMac
  • Dark Mode for my late night forum exchanges with Herb
  • Built-in image annotation (finally)
  • DuckDuckGo

Wow, Edouard! That's a blast from the past! I had Now Utilities, and the whole suite  of software (Now Compress, Now Contact, Now Up-To-Date) Now UTD was a free handout disk in the local store to get you hooked.

More of those old IT memories . . . (Was: Yosemite)

Howdy Steve and WeatherCat Mac old-timers,

Yup, I was a hard core Now software fan.  I used all their utilities including Now Compress and I really liked Now Up-To-Date and Now Contact.  I ended up getting a Newton on closeout and tried to get into this mobile computing on the ground floor.  Later I got a Palm Pilot to manage my appointments and I really liked how I could sync with Now Up-To-Date.  Alas, Now software didn't survive the transition to OS X and Apple's own creation of a contact and appointment manager.  It is a real pity though.  Apple's versions still aren't as good, and I haven't found any 3rd party products that had the same feature-set.

Oh well, . . . . memories!!!

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

To continue this tangent for a bit, after Now UTD, I used Agendus on my several Palm devices. Once I moved to iOS, I looked at Agendus, but it was horrible! I tried several PIMs (as they were then known), and finally found one that lives up to the expectations from UTD and Agendus for Palm. Take a look at Pocket Informant Pro (or the non Pro version, which is now free. They are working on an OS X version, which will make it perfect! (I'm now syncing todo items to it from Appigo ToDo via Toodledoo, and manually syncing notes.)

Hi Steve and WeatherCat organized life types,

Ooh! This does look promising!  I've got a pile of wood chips to spread around the yard, but I'll definitely check this out when I have little more time.

Thanks Steve!
