Hi all

There is somebody who has posted in the old MacWeather.net forum looking for help. (Please help a Mac weather guy out). He wants Mac weather software for his LaCrosse 2811 station, so needs to be directed here.

Unfortunately the site will not let me log in as I've forgotten my password, so I cannot post a reply to him. Can somebody spare a couple of minutes to help him out please?

Ta

JC

I haven't been able to get on over there this morning. It times out, so there might be a server problem. You should be able to retrieve (or create) your password from the login screen.

I know several folks have tried registering over there and given up. I forwarded a couple of them to Barzi without reply. The spammers sure seem to be able to register, though...

I finally got in, and I see Randall did as well. Unfortunately, the guy has a LaCrosse 2811, which isn't supported by WeatherCat, Weather Snoop, Weather Display, nor Weather Display or Cumulus on the Windows side. Poor guy has Parkinson's Disease and is looking for something easy to use to access his station, but he bought the wrong hardware.

Cheers guys

I've not been able to access the site for a few weeks now, I've sent off a couple of "I've forgotten my password' requests over the weeks but no joy there either. Looks like I'll just have to be an viewer rather than a poster for the foreseeable future.

Howdy JC, Steve, and MacWeather monitoring types,

Don't know what the deal is, but it is really messed up at the moment.  May need to poke Barzi about it if things don't clear up on their own.

Oh well,

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Hi folks,

Really, I don't know what to do more! If I configure a new spam-fight system on Macweather, it'll be even more difficult to log in or register as it is now...  [banghead]

I see two (not so bad) solutions:

1. We replace this crappy phpBB forum by a SimpleMachine forum. Since years and years, spam is a problem on phpBB forums. And it was never fixed by the developpers. This solution need a large amount of time.

2. We shut down the forum, and redirect macweather.net domain to the Trixology forum. This take 2 minutes.

I would prefer solution #2.

Option 2 is intriguing. I'd imagine Stu would need to give approval for that, and there's be a loss of data for people who use other applications or never moved to WeatherCat. Option 3 could be make it read only and send interested folks this way, as long as the domain name is not costly.

The WXforum has added a Mac weather software section, but there's very little activity to date.

{edit} sorry Randall, I've been a little lax over the past several days. I'll get back on that!

Hi Barzi,

I would prefer solution #2.

I agree, I haven't joined Mac Weather mainly due to this forum having all the stuff I need :)

The only way I could think that Macweather would survive is of you diversify on "Macintosh Weather Software".

I think that was the idea, Tim. But WeatherCat, Weather Display, and Weather Snoop all have their own forums, so it has ended up as a convenient place to point people other places and nothing more. Too bad, as I think we all wonted it to continue. But as Randall says, it has become a spam headache more than anything else.

RIP and compromise (Re: MacWeather forum)
« Reply #11 on: March 03, 2013, 10:11:07 PM »
Howdy Barzi, Reinhard, Randall, Steve, Tim, and WeatherCat fans,

I'm afraid the handwriting has been on the wall for MacWeather for a while.  It just never reached the critical mass needed to move beyond a "lifeboat" for LWC users.

Option 2 is intriguing. I'd imagine Stu would need to give approval for that, and there's be a loss of data for people who use other applications or never moved to WeatherCat. Option 3 could be make it read only and send interested folks this way, as long as the domain name is not costly.

I would like to suggest a variation on all of the above that perhaps is as close to a compromise as is possible.

The domain name will be up for renewal this summer.  Until then lock the forum down, but leave it accessible.  That way if there is some bit of info that should be moved over to this forum we have some time to find out about it.

However, instead of having www.macweather.net going directly to that locked down forum, have it instead go to a static page informing visitors that the forum has been closed and giving them 3 choices in the form of links:

  • For LWC support send them to the WeatherCat forum.
  • For general Mac weather questions send them the new topic on WXForum that Steve moderates.
  • To look up old information MacWeather.net - supply a link to the locked down forum.

Does that seem worthwhile?  That would perhaps increase the traffic on the Mac section of WXForum - that would be as close to saving the legacy of MacWeather.net as can be hoped at this point.

Opinions solicited!

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

It doesn't show that you are banned, and I went through the moderator log to see if I'd accidentally banned you or you IP and haven't. Are you sure it wasn't just down?
