WC crashes after upgrading to Sonoma
« on: June 01, 2024, 02:23:43 AM »
I recently upgraded my M1 Mac to Sonoma 14.5.  After applying the new OS, WC crashes every time I restart the computer.  In order to get things working I have to delete the Trixology preference file, restart WC and it works (although I have to set the app up each time) until I restart the computer.

Has anyone else had this problem?
Does anyone have a fix?

Thanks

Try this procedure. (Re: WC crashes after upgrading to Sonoma)

There have been other users with similar problems.  Apparently the best solution can be found in this posting:

It requires first replacing your preference file as you have attempted to do.  However, make sure to carry out all the steps described in this WeatherCat Wiki posting:

https://wiki.trixology.com/index.php?title=How_to_create_and_use_a_backup_of_your_WeatherCat_preferences_file

Then you need to replace your data with a valid backup.  The backup could come either from a system-wide backup (like Apple's Time Machine,) or WeatherCat's own backup facility.

A number of users have reported success after performing both tasks.

Let us know if you also are able to restore reliability through this procedure.

Thanks, as always, Edouard

I had followed the directions in the previous posts yesterday and did get things working but I did a little experiment today and quit WC and ....  again, it wouldn't open or quickly crashed during multiple attempts to launch it.

So I followed the directions once again and WC crashed multiple times when I attempted to start the program ...  sometimes immediately when it opened or sometimes it crashed after it did the back up procedure.  I finally have it open and working but based on my recent experience I suspect I'll have a dead program if I quit WC or restart the computer.  I reinstalled the WC program too but that didn't seem to make a difference and I probably ran through the deleting of the preference file 5 or 6 times before it started working.

Things were perfect until I moved up to Sonoma.

Dear Drew and WeatherCat troubleshooters,

So what version of MacOS were you running previously?  Was it an earlier version of Sonoma or was it Ventura?

Alas, your problems sound like the preference file is getting corrupted before WeatherCat can get started.  Have you tried boot in "safe mode?"  Here is Apple's documentation on the topic.

https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/start-up-your-mac-in-safe-mode-mh21245/mac

If you have a second system that you can boot from, that would be even more certain to eliminate any sort of preference file caching issues.

Sorry, that I don't have anything else more constructive to suggest.  Can folks running Sonoma chime in with more timely suggestions since they are running the same version of MacOS?
