Continuous WC crash after computer upgrade
« on: May 08, 2024, 03:47:52 PM »
Hi All,

I’ve got a problem I can’t track down.
A few weeks ago, I upgraded my weather computer. It’s a 2019 iMac (Intel) running Sonoma 14.4.1, 8 GB RAM, and 1 TB storage. It is dedicated to WeatherCat (v3.20 build 364). The only other “non-OS” app on it is Carbon Copy Cloner for scheduled backups.

WeatherCat runs great on the new iMac for a couple of days then crashes. (The vague “WeatherCat unexpectedly quit” message.) I reboot, start WC again, and it runs great for 2 or 3 days then crashes again. It’s also at different times of day or night when it crashes. I’ve done the delete prefs try to no avail.

On the old computer (2011 iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8, same apps), WeatherCat could run for months with no problem.

I am attaching the crash report, but it’s Greek to me.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Michael

<MINCE>

I would suggest you post your problem on the WeatherCat forums, there are several Mac users there since WC is a Mac only app! ;D Of course, you'll need to register to post.
I recently made a permanent move to the State of Confusion! I would have sworn you had posted a message and I was reading it at Techsurvivors.net. The interface is also from Simple Machines and the Message page is identical to this site.

Only other suggestion is to try the Search function here. I don't think many members check for recent posts here, so it could be several days before anyone sees your post. "Search", of course, is anxiously await your query.  [lol]

Uh, not sure how to interpret that response.
This IS the WeatherCat forum, and I stated iMac as my computer.
When I say "non-OS" software, I'm talking about any apps that did not come with the OS from Apple.

Try this procedure. (Re: Continuous WC crash after computer upgrade)

Dear Michael, X-Air and WeatherCat troubleshooters,

WeatherCat runs great on the new iMac for a couple of days then crashes. (The vague “WeatherCat unexpectedly quit” message.) I reboot, start WC again, and it runs great for 2 or 3 days then crashes again. It’s also at different times of day or night when it crashes. I’ve done the delete prefs try to no avail.
. . .
Any ideas?

There have been other users with similar problems.  Apparently the best solution can be found in this posting:

https://athena.trixology.com/index.php?topic=3579.msg34358#msg34358

It requires first replacing your preference file as described in this WeatherCat Wiki posting:

https://wiki.trixology.com/index.php?title=How_to_create_and_use_a_backup_of_your_WeatherCat_preferences_file

Then you need to replace your data with a valid backup.  The backup could come either from a system-wide backup (like Apple's Time Machine,) or WeatherCat's own backup facility.

A number of users have reported success after performing both tasks.

Let us know if you also are able to restore reliability through this procedure.
