Any WeatherCatters in the path of Hilary?
« on: August 18, 2023, 11:18:48 PM »
Dear WeatherCat observers of extreme weather - preferably at a safe distance,

There is definitely an unusual situation developing with the Eastern Pacific hurricane Hilary.  If you aren't used to the National Hurricane Center website here is the link to the Eastern Pacific page:

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/?epac

At the moment, Hilary is turning eastward and that will mostly mitigate any effects it might have for Northern California.  However, it does seem to be aiming to make a bull’s-eye hit on Southern California.

Anybody on this forum in harm's way of Hilary?

I'm also in Northern California -- I'm hoping for at least some precipitation out of this event! I am quite worried about all those Southern California homes built on and around alluvial fans or adjacent to and in(!) ephemeral (storm responding but dry otherwise) streams. Lots of updates on Mastodon from @BakerRL75@m.ai6yr.org, @Geewhizpat@newsie.social, and many others. I'm @rpmik@avgeek.social

If we do get any precipitation, it'll be nice to see WeatherCat in action instead of having to wait until winter!

Stay safe everyone!

NorCal won't get much. (Re: Any WeatherCatters in the path of Hilary?)

Dear Ryan and WeatherCat observers of extreme weather - preferably from a safe distance,

Those of us in Northern California will probably get a bucket tip or two, but Hilary continues to veer to the east.  Unless something changes, our rain gauges won't get much in the way of exercise.

I am quite worried about all those Southern California homes built on and around alluvial fans or adjacent to and in(!) ephemeral (storm responding but dry otherwise) streams.

I lived in San Diego for a few years and even then there was some flooding that damaged a major shopping center.  No matter how carefully people try to prepare of this storm there is going to be some serious damage.  There simply wasn't enough time to prepare for the amount of rainfall they are expecting.  I don't know if there will be some mandatory evacuations of low lying areas, but that would probably be prudent.  Hilary will definitely be making some headlines.

Indeed folks stay safe!

Am a bit late replying. We were in San Diego during the storm and delayed out drive up the coast to avoid problems. There was steady rain but no serious problems that we observed. That said, when we finally began our drive up the coast it was evident that there were a lot of places where flooding washed over a road. Thankfully, we encountered no difficulties - glad we postpone our drive up the coast.

PS. Am back in Georgia now. :-)

I'm glad that you escaped Hilary without problems.  In the end, it was somewhat overhyped.  However, it is always better to be safe than sorry.
