Not getting archived data from Davis USB logger
« on: October 17, 2022, 10:33:04 PM »
Hi,
Hopefully this is the correct area for my question.
I've recently installed WeatherCat and going through the trial period. Actually installed it a few weeks back and just got around to checking it out. I have about two days left on the trial.

I've tried powering down my Mac to see if the data from the data loggers memory uploads to WeatherCat but it does not. The data transfer resumes no problem but nothing gets transferred for the time period that the computer was powered off. I am hoping to figure this out in case of power outages and such using the data loggers' memory capabilities.

I have a mac mini M1 chip running Monterey.  Davis Vantage Pro and wireless console w/USB data logger.

Ive been using meteobridge/meteostick for several years to WU without issue but would like to have data stored locally.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

First of all, looks like a new subscriber! Welcome AboaRd, davdb!!!

Secondly, thanks for noting your OS, hardware and Davis model.

Lastly, I've absolutely no experience with the M1 nor macOS Monterey. However, have you installed the latest Silicon Labs USB bridge controller. I'm not even positive that you need it with macOS Monterey/M1! Hopefully those using systems similar to yours will come along and give you some useful info.

Thanks for the welcome!

Yes I did install the new Silicon Labs USB bridge controller. At first WeatherCat couldn't see my station(console). Thought I had a bad USB cable maybe.
Once installed it found the station immediately and all data fields began populating. Everything seems to work ok just will not grab any archived data from the data logger when the Mac mini powers back up.

Waiting period? (Re: Not getting archived data from Davis USB logger)

Dear davdb, X-Air, and WeatherCat troubleshooters,

Let me also welcome you to the WeatherCat forum!  :)

I've tried powering down my Mac to see if the data from the data loggers memory uploads to WeatherCat but it does not. The data transfer resumes no problem but nothing gets transferred for the time period that the computer was powered off.
. . . .

This may seem like an unexpected question, but how long did you keep WeatherCat off before attempting to download data from the data logger.  There is a minimal period that must pass before WeatherCat will attempt to get data from the logger.  If you only shut WeatherCat off for a very short period, WeatherCat will instead interpolate the data for the gap.

Please do let us know.

Cheers, Edouard

Thank you for suggesting that  :)
A longer delay was all that was needed. I shut down WeatherCat for just over an hour and upon relaunch data was download from the console and brought up to date.
Thanks again!

Unfortunately, I never did find out how long WeatherCat waits before it will start downloading from the data logger.  Can somebody share with us what that period is?

Cheers, Edouard

Well I hve almost exactly the same problem as  Davdb  .
I am using a D Vantage Pro1 on an imac with weathercat . However I am linking with a bespoke datalogger called "Belfryboy". It is used a fair bit by other users. I have installed drivers  and set up the baud rate etc.
I loads in all the live data exactly as you would expect. However if I power the mac off at night when I start in the morning weathercat goes into the usual recovering historic data mode and always seems to be downloading 512 records !!?? When this is done and it goes live I find all I have from the " off" period is a set of identical values that seem to relate to no actual value recorded. It is though on the log someone has pasted in a set of identical random numbers into each field.
SO in short the  console links into weathercat live but the logger hasn't managed to pick up any of the data?
Can anyone help?

Unfortunately, you are the first WeatherCatter we've heard of to use Belfryboy. WC works fine with another third-party logger, the WiFiLogger2 Data Logger. I don't know what to tell you. Sorry.

According to the fellow making these data loggers, the logging feature is supported.  Here is a link to his blog:

https://belfryboyweatherbits.blogspot.com/p/the-belfryboy-clone-usb-logger.html

It is a clone of the Davis data logger, so WeatherCat should be able to use exactly the same procedure to download the data from the console.

My guess is that your data logger has some sort of a defect.  Since they are made by hand, there is a greater risk of that.  I would suggest that you get in touch with the fellow making them and ask what you should do.

Sorry for the lack of a more positive solution, but sometimes that's how things work out.

Edouard

Thanks for filling me in.  It is an easy to remember number.
