WeatherCat on Monterey: Silicon Labs USB Driver difficulties
« on: January 16, 2022, 03:05:44 AM »
Hello,

New guy here. I've been using WeatherSnoop with my Davis station for ~10 years? Recently, the developer sold his product, and the new company has dropped support for WS4, while charging $100 for WS5 which is now called Fluent Weather. It added a lot of things I don't need around analysis. I'm not opposed to paying for software upgrades, but their current software uses the same driver software as WS4, and WeatherCat, in order to communicate with my Davis data logger, the [Silicon Labs UART USB driver](https://www.silabs.com/developers/usb-to-uart-bridge-vcp-drivers)

I have a Mac mini which I just upgraded Monterey, which is what broke WS4, or more specifically, the USB driver, which, despite my best efforts (multiple uninstall/reinstall loops, logging into my Recovery Mode and adding SiLab's identifier to my accept list… my system report is still listing two entries for this driver in my "disabled software" list.) I cannot get this thing to work.

Has anyone faced and overcome this driver problem? If I can solve this, I'm probably going to move to WeatherCat _anyhow_ because I'm not pleased with the direction of WeatherSnoop's successor. I've seen quite a lot of uncertainty in these forums about the future of WC, but if I can get this to work, and it runs reliable uploading to WeatherUnderground for the next few years, it's worth the price.

(Bonus if anyone has ever imported their WeatherSnoop data to WeatherCat, do let me know your secret, thanks)

Dear bwc and WeatherCat faithful,

New guy here.  . . . . .

Well then let me welcome you to the WeatherCat forum!

I have a Mac mini which I just upgraded Monterey, which is what broke WS4, or more specifically, the USB driver

What did you upgrade from?  Was it Big Sur or an older version of macOS?

which, despite my best efforts (multiple uninstall/reinstall loops, logging into my Recovery Mode and adding SiLab's identifier to my accept list… my system report is still listing two entries for this driver in my "disabled software" list.) I cannot get this thing to work.

Unfortunately, I'm still marooned at Mojave because of some old software I'm not willing to part with, so I'm not going to be able to help you much.  The only thing I'm puzzled about is that you are seeing two entries for the Silicon Labs driver.  Are they both applications or is one an older kernel extension?

You might ask your question as a reply on this thread:

There are WeatherCat users who have successfully gotten WeatherCat to run on Monterey who have posted on that thread and might still be watching it.

Beyond that, anyone else have some suggestions?

Please do keep us posted on what you uncover.
