WeatherCatRCP no longer able to connect to WeatherCat?
« on: January 01, 2022, 10:06:06 PM »
Dear WeatherCat iOS users,

Last night I tried to get the climate report as I usually do using WeatherCatRCP.  This time the report didn't update as it should.  When I go to the channels pane of the app I get a 'Unable to verify server" error.  On the other hand, when I check my configuration it reports correctly that it has found a WeatherCat server with the correct version number.  I have rebooted both devices.  I upgraded my iPhone SE (2020) to iOS 15.2 from 15.1.  I also checked to confirm that WeatherCat is serving data using the RCP protocol.  I can connect to it using a web browser.

I'm kind of at wit's end as to what else to try.  Any suggestions on what else to do?  Uninstall and reinstall WeatherCatRCP perhaps?

Thanks in advance,

Edouard

That's happened to me too and it's a nuisance. Why can the author fix it?  [banghead] Fortunately, it's a rare occurrence.

First try removing WeatherCatRCP from the background processes (swipe up, swipe WeatherCatRCP up) and, if that doesn't work, delete WeatherCatRCP and re-install.

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system

Dear Grand, X-Air, and WeatherCat iOS fans,

First try removing WeatherCatRCP from the background processes (swipe up, swipe WeatherCatRCP up)

Alas no that didn't work.

if that doesn't work, delete WeatherCatRCP and re-install.

However, this relatively drastic step did work.  I'm back in business!   [tup]  Thanks Grand!  :)

Perhaps because iOS isn't as robust as it is supposed to be?   :o

Thanks again, Edouard  [cheers1]

I love it when a WeatherCatter figures out how to fix something that wasn't supposed to break in the first place. Good work, you two.

Grand:

Now it's my turn. I cannot get WeatherCatRCP to connect to the server either locally or via Internet. I can still connect to Stu's server with the app. And it's been so long since I set it up I can't remember what address to enter in the settings to connect to my WC server when I am not at home. Nor can I figure out why I can't connect when I select Local. So many questions and so confused. I have already tried deleting the app from my phone and reinstalling but still not working! Cannot get it to connect on my iPad either. I have restarted WC on my iMac. I'm running 3.2 Build 224.
Can you point me in the right direction?

Thanks.

Reboot iOS? (Re: WeatherCatRCP no longer able to connect to WeatherCat?)

Dear Blick, Grand, and WeatherCat troubleshooters,

. . .

You probably already did this, but I don't see it mentioned in the posting.  Did you try a hard reset on your phone and iPad?  I'm finding that you have to do this at least once a month even on an iPhone that doesn't get a lot of use.

Cheers, Edouard

First, some review:

"Local" is the local network connection. WeatherCat and your iPhone need to be connected to the same WiFi network.

As to access when you are not at home (and outside the range of your WiFi network), you need the IP address of your system. If it's a static IP address, then you can enter it in the WeatherCat Servers list (WeatherCatRCP -> Settings -> Manage WeatherCat Servers). If it's a dynamic IP address, then you can still enter it, but it may change. A tip: when you enter an IP address in the WeatherCat Servers list, first type in the address, tap "done", then select the radio button next to the IP address. Do it in that order. But, wait, there is one more step: port forwarding.

Since remote access (eg using the IP address) is coming in over the Internet, your router will block it unless you set up port forwarding on the router. There are instructions on how to do this in the WeatherCat Wiki.

If you use the IP address and set up port forwarding, that should work for both Local and remote access. You shouldn't need to switch between Local and IP address in the settings. But remember, if the dynamic IP address changes, you'll lose the connection to WeatherCat.

This is the case, but the WeatherCat Server Status in RCP displays Verifying, but never connects. It times out and I get Unable to verify server.

As to access when you are not at home (and outside the range of your WiFi network), you need the IP address of your system. If it's a static IP address, then you can enter it in the WeatherCat Servers list (WeatherCatRCP -> Settings -> Manage WeatherCat Servers).

This is the case, and I am using a static IP address, but the WeatherCat Server Status in RCP displays Connecting, but never connects. It eventually switches to display Verifying but then I eventually get Unable to verify server.

If you use the IP address and set up port forwarding, that should work for both Local and remote access. You shouldn't need to switch between Local and IP address in the settings.

I have port forwarding set up and have verified two of the five ports in the range are open.

I don't know what has changed because this was woking fine for years.

Time for the ten-pound sledgehammer: delete WeatherCatRCP, reset the iPhone, and reinstall WeatherCatRCP.

If that doesn't work, I suggest a two-week stay in the Bahamas.

Hahaha. Darn it — the sledge hammer approach was exactly what I wanted to avoid. I'm going to have to work up my courage to reset my iPhone. And I'm not sure it will make a difference. I can understand one device needing that, but I have trouble believing that the iPhone and the iPad both went bonkers at the same exact time, but only with WC RCP and no other apps.
