Web camera recommendations?
« on: December 31, 2021, 11:05:17 PM »
I want to add a camera to my WeatherCat site and I'd like some recommendations on cameras that play well with the platform. I have power at the camera location but need to use WiFi for the connection. In the past I've used a Foscam camera but wasn't happy with their app. Most camera are understandably designed for security monitoring and I find it hard to tell how well they'd work with WeatherCat. Also, I my technical skills are intermediate at best and I don't want to have to get into anything too wonky. Any suggestions?

Dear DMatterm and WeatherCat faithful,

Unfortunately, I'm still using a venerable Logitech USB webcam, so my experiences won't be of any help to you.  However, there are others on the forum who I hope will offer opinions soon.

In the meantime, I see that this is your first posting on the WeatherCat forum.  So by all means welcome!

If it suits your fancy, feel free to introduce yourself in this topic on our forum:

First of all… welcome to the forums!!!! [cheer]

I think there are several threads and maybe even a Poll on this forum. Try a search with “webcam” or “webcam recommendations” and you should get a list of cameras used by members. I started with a POE, had to switch to WiFi when that camera died. As long as the camera has at least a 1024 x whatever, you should get a decent image of your area/weather. WC handles the capturing, creating a time-lapse and single-frame images as well as uploading everything to your web space.  ThU5:-)

Welcome to the Forum DMatterm.

Several weeks ago I scoured the forum looking for webcam recommendations and came up empty. The vast majority of threads refer to wifi cameras no longer being sold. I am using a Sharx camera but they stopped selling wifi cameras and only sell high performance security cameras now. The same applies to most reputable companies who were selling simple wifi cameras just a few years ago.

Logitech does have this camera, temporarily unavailable from them, but available on Amazon. I don't know if it will allow you to capture still shots from a live stream, which is how WeatherCat composes its time lapse video.

I am also checking with Axis to see if their wifi camera might work. I'll post back here after I hear back from them. JosBaz was using one of their earlier models and said it worked fine, but that model is now discontinued. I am asking them about their AXIS M1065-LW Network Camera.

Along with DMatterm, I would appreciate anyone who knows about currently available wifi cameras working with the Cat to post here.

Thanks, and Happy New Year.

It's been a while since anyone has posted on this, and I'm still hoping to find a camera. The Logitech Circle View camera looks interesting, but it would be great to hear from someone who has used it or has another suggestions. Thanks!
