Help With HTML Coding
« on: October 29, 2020, 10:32:17 AM »
I am not a programmer and all my website stuff is done via google->copy->paste!

My website is at https://wx-watch.co.uk

I have just got a Davis Airlink and as WeatherCat does not as yet support this I wrote a separate page to display the output

https://wx-watch.co.uk/aqi.html

This uses the output from

https://www.weatherlink.com/embeddablePage/show/c49cf3c46c1242a597228abbb7cbe234/summary

And embeds part of it in my page.

Now as I said this was all done via cut and paste, then altering a few numbers to see what happens!!!

The site displays fine on my Mac and iPad but on my iPhone the screen is slightly too big, the right edge being just off the screen.
Could anyone (politely) explain what I need to do to get it to fit?

Thanks

I am still trying to recover from having our electricity turned off on Sunday to Monday because of what our electrical utility calls a "Public Safety Power Shutoff," so all I can do is offer a hint.

Fitting your webpage on your iPhone will depend in part on which model you are using.  iPhones have fixed screen resolution that has been a nightmare for app and website developers.

Would you be satisfied with making this webpage smaller for all viewers, or would you prefer to have larger text on devices that can support it?  This can be done, but is complicated.  An example of this scheme is used in this WeatherCat ipwx web template:

https://athena.trixology.com/index.php?topic=213.0

I run this on my website so that I get a different display of weather information on my phone than on any other device.  If you are curious, you might download the template and experiment with it.

Beyond this, does anybody have a simple suggestion on how to reduce the size of text coming from the "canned" Davis HTML?

Do keep us posted of any changes you make.

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

The problem there is "the "canned" Davis HTML". CSS or javascript could take care of much of the problem. I use CSS to switch my nav menu from the wide one (for desktops) to a pop-up, narrow one for mobile devises. javascript could do the same or simply re-direct you to a completely different site with a different arrangement of your info mainly for use by small screens.

The problem is much more than changing text sizes. a simple bit of CSS could set the text size to 4 pts and the Davis page might fit on a narrow mobile device. BUT, you'd need a magnifying glass or use the devices "zoom" function to actually red anything!

I think you'd be surprised at how easy it is to create a web page. There are about two dozen 'tags' you'd have to learn, but then all you need it a Text Editor. A web page is simply a collection of lines of text.

Once you have a simple web page, you can use the very powerful WC app to place current and historical data on it and automatically upload it to your web host. ThU5:-) You don't need Davis for anything other than their fine hardware. :)

Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
