WARNING: Mojave Users vs Security Update 2020-05
« on: September 30, 2020, 09:14:50 pm »
I'm having some work done on my Mac mini next week, probably a HHD change. As part of my trouble-shooting process last weekend, I attempted to create a new user. Could not do it! I assumed it was simply part of my HHD/S.M.A.R.T. problem.

However, the recent TidBITS (1533) reports that the Security Update (and/or the Safari update) is causing problems when trying to create a new user. Here is a link to a report and an investigation by Randy Singer (a long time Mac expert):Safari 14.0 + Mojave 2020-005 Security Update Causing Major Problems! This appears to be in the process of being corrected:
Quote from: R. Singer
UPDATE #7 – 9/30 1:30PM – Apple just pulled both problematic updates!

Pulled from the update catalog
1. Safari 14.0 – Released 9/16 – 001-50026
2. Mojave 2020-005 Security Update – Released 9/24 – 001-50026
Added to the update catalog
1. Safari 13.1.2 – Released Today – 061-98246
This is Apple’s acknowledgment of the issue.

Anyone who has not installed the updates will now be safe. This also means that we should be getting an official fix!!!

Stay tuned!

I've been following this too. Only applies to Mojave. Glad they pulled 'em. I updated to Safari 14 but not to the Security Update. Safari 14 has one disappointing change: no more Top Sites.

Dear X-Air, Blick, and WeatherCat faithful,

. . . Here is a link to a report and an investigation by Randy Singer (a long time Mac expert):Safari 14.0 + Mojave 2020-005 Security Update Causing Major Problems!

 [wink] . . . . So where was this report early Sunday morning when I finally decided it was safe to upgrade? . . . .  >:( . . . .  lol(1)

Seriously, thanks for the tip.  I thought I had waited long enough before upgrading, but I think I will further delay such updates in the future.  Fortunately, no ill effects on my computer for the moment.  Still very disappointing that Apple continues to fail to deliver when it comes to quality control.

Oh well, . . . . . Edouard

Thanks for the updated information.  The review definitely seems to give the "all clear" on these system updates.  Still, I think I'll give this one another week to "stew" . . . . . . . . Just in case!

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

I like my 'soup' very think, also. I updated the iMac but the mini is going in for, hopefully, a HD change tomorrow. It's only marginally usable and frustrating as it is. [banghead] [rolleyes2]

I took a page from Steve's book and was the first on the mountain to install both revised updates and everything is working fine.
