Uploading data from WeatherCat to the Windy app
« on: July 17, 2020, 11:48:32 PM »
Can anyone out there walk a relatively unsophisticated user through this process? My station is on WU at KMITHREE17, and I would love to add it to the Windy app (which I love) -- but I can't figure out how to do so. I have posted on the Windy forums and have emailed WeatherCat's tech team - no luck on either. Thanks for any support you can offer.

Dear longhaulpro and WeatherCat faithful,

Since this is your first posting, welcome to the WeatherCat forum!!

Is this the app you are referring to as Windy?

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/windy-com/id1161387262

If so, what are you hoping to do exactly with your Weather Underground station information?  Is this app supposed to read data directly from Weather Underground?

Unfortunately, I don't use this app, so I'm of little help but perhaps another one of our members may be more helpful.

Please do help us understand what you are trying to do.

Once more welcome!  :)

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

First, let me add my "Welcome to WC Forums" to Edouards!

I think he is talking about Windy.com. I have a link to their various displays (initially winds) on my weather site home page (one of the six graphics on lower part of the page). Their map does, I think, show some PWS. I would think their forums would have topics covering the use of their API's, however. About the only thing i can provide is a direct link to those API's. However, I assume longhallpro probably already has that info.

Simply by registering with Windy.com, one can add a webcam image, assuming you have a website. It might be possible to use a WU webcam image if you can determine a url at the WU page displaying that image. That would assume the usual caveats about WU are understood.  [banghead] [rolleyes2]

A cursory look at the three API's seems to indicate they are designed for using Windy data rather than uploading data to the service. Perhaps they "goal" can explain their operations:
Quote
Our goal is to provide the best weather forecasting service in the world.
I have seen their service mentioned by Part 135 aviation operators in places like New Guinea because there is an extreme lack of usable weather forecast data in remote places like that.

Windy has a separate PWS API for data upload, though if you already upload to CWOP then Windy automatically adds your station for you and extracts the data from there - although the CWOP data is delayed somewhat; and less feature rich than uploading it directly.

Hi all, and thanks for the responses (I didn't see them until now). Yes, I was referring to Windy.com. And while I was able to figure out how to upload my PWS data to WU, I have not been able to figure out how to get it to Windy. Forgive me here, I am learning - but uploading to CWOP is different than to WU? I see this link: http://www.wxqa.com/SIGN-UP.html -- but the link on that page to instructions on uploading to CWOP seems to be dead.

Again - bear with me - I am learning! Thank you all so much for your kindness and patience.

WeatherCat can do the uploading to CWOP for you, once you register. Perhaps this CWOP link will help. This page has more info on CWOP.

Anyone? (Re: Uploading data from WeatherCat to the Windy app)

Dear X-Air, Mark,  longhaulpro, and WeatherCat faithful,

Hi all, and thanks for the responses (I didn't see them until now). Yes, I was referring to Windy.com.

Okay, thank you.  It helps to know which service you are trying to use.

And while I was able to figure out how to upload my PWS data to WU, I have not been able to figure out how to get it to Windy.

Does anybody also use Windy.com and could look into whether or not they have some sort of preference related to Weather Underground PWS?  I'm really overwhelmed at this point and can't take this on.

Forgive me here, I am learning - but uploading to CWOP is different than to WU?

Yes, CWOP or Citizen Weather Observation Program is different than submitting data to Weather Underground.  There is a Wikipedia article describing the program:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizen_Weather_Observer_Program

I see this link: http://www.wxqa.com/SIGN-UP.html -- but the link on that page to instructions on uploading to CWOP seems to be dead.

WeatherCat can do the uploading to CWOP for you, once you register. Perhaps this CWOP link will help. This page has more info on CWOP.

Unfortunately, I also see the broken link and am unable to find a replacement link in the short bit of time I have this afternoon.  Can anyone else figure out where are the directions to start uploading to CWOP?

Again - bear with me - I am learning! Thank you all so much for your kindness and patience.

No worries!
:)  Just keep in mind that we can also be very busy.  We will hopefully get your questions answered but it might take a while!

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

What folks might be seeing is the file directory. An old link I have goes to one of those (need to update that link...) showing the list of files in the directory instead of the actual html file that should show in your broswer:
Code: [Select]
[TXT] citizenweather.html 2019-12-04 13:50 4.3K
[TXT] cw_form.html 2020-06-26 22:02 1.7K
[IMG] cwp_logo.gif 2019-12-04 13:50 9.6K
[TXT] signup.html 2019-12-04 13:50 3.2K
So double-clicking either the citizenweather.html or the signup.html will take you to a 'page' that will display a "CWOP" page. Either the links I posted above will get to these same pages (or at least the 'sign-up' page.

Normally, a web site will use a purpose-built page to display the 'home' page for the site, lacking that, most primitive sites simply use "index.html" which most browsers will open by default. Perhaps Mr. Gladstone is working on rearranging the site? BTW, this listing helps confirm that an "html" file is simply a plain text file. Nothing magic about them. Anyone can create a web site. You just need to use some of the very small number of "words". ThU32:-)

Broken link. (Re: Uploading data from WeatherCat to the Windy app)

Dear X-Air and WeatherCat faithful,

What folks might be seeing is the file directory.
. . . . .

Actually no.  The broken link is on this page:

http://www.findu.com/citizenweather/signup.html

You can find it in this text, the link is underlined as in the page:

Quote
2. Citizen Weather Observers

A discussion on getting started in CWOP is available and has links to numerous resources.

Here is the URL that goes nowhere:

http://info.aprs.net/index.php?title=Weather

At the moment, it isn't even possible to connect to the server: info.aprs.net.  It has been over 10 years since I first signed up for CWOP, so I've forgotten the details, but I thought there was web form that you needed to fill out.  That is what I'm trying to relocate for longhaulpro.

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

I can only assume you didn't check/follow my links. The first has info about CWOP, the second has info about joining. On that page is a link to the form: This link is only for Edouard (or anyone else who wants to register at CWOP).

The 'code' I posted is what I saw when I used a link I had on my "Partners" page. It's simply the directory of what is at that url. At any rate, it seems to work fine now and the links I posted still take you to several different CWOP pages (APRSWXNET, Citizen Weather Observer Program, INFORMATION FOR JOINING CWOP and CITIZEN WEATHER PROGRAM REGISTRATION FORM) where all other info can be found. There are other links on those pages, of course, including access to siting, viewing your info as well as others, etc. Hope that helps. Please let me know what pages you are interested in and I'll try to provide you a link. :)

PS: When links unexplainably fail to site you have often visited, it's a good time to empty browser caches. ThU32:-)

. . .

I did try to find the links in question, but I had only a few minutes to spare - I could have missed it.  Thanks for doing the legwork I just didn't have time to do.  Supposedly, COVID-19 has made lots and lots of people bored.  Alas, I'm most definitely not one of them.  Quite the opposite, it has made a my very hectic life much worse . . . .  :(

Oh well,

I love it when a WeatherCatter figures something out! Thanks for letting us know.

Regarding an earlier comment in this thread about the possibility of Mr. Gladstone working on his site, hahahahahahaha. Surely you jest. I suppose it's possible but it hasn't happened yet during most of this century.
