Can WeatherCat do these things?
« on: April 05, 2020, 01:47:55 PM »
I installed and trialed WeatherCat when it was in beta, but I couldn't get it setup to perform the way I wanted, so I have persisted with Weatherlink ever since.
Fast forward some 8 years and 2 major versions and I'm back reevaluating WC again. I'm still not sure if it will do exactly what I want.

Rather than waste days trying to make it work, I've opted for the easy option of asking in the forum.

What I want to do:
1. Run WC on a mac mini located in a cupboard (with the Davis VP2).
     -> Done.
2. Import 11 years of Weatherlink data into WC to enable statistical analysis.
->  Using instructions found in these forums, I have converted the wlk files to WC format but am yet to load.
3. Display near real time weather on 2 surplus iPads (running iOS 9) located in the house - ie replace the Davis console with an iPad.
-> I thought I could do this with WeatherCatPad however it requires iOS10 so this appears impossible unless done in a web page.
4. Run a WC Client on my wife's iMac which can display both near real time and statistical information (she is the weather fanatic in our house)
-> the WC client appears to still only display real time data. So this means to access statistical & historical data my wife has to remote in to the server, which is beyond her capability.
-> what I really need is the full version running on her iMac which accesses the database on the mac mini.

Can anybody assist me with whether 3 & 4 can be possible, without days of work? Thanks in advance.

Tony.

Dear dasher689 and WeatherCat faithful,

. . . . .
Can anybody assist me with whether 3 & 4 can be possible, without days of work? Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, there isn't an easy way to either thing that you are looking for.  About the closest thing would be some of the web templates for WeatherCat that you can find here:

https://athena.trixology.com/index.php?board=5.0

Some of these templates do display data in real-time.  Perhaps that would suffice for your attempt to replace a Davis console.  Still, you would have to install and configure these template to use them.  Still, you can see these templates in action, so you can quickly judge for yourself if that might be worth it for you.

The same point applies to accessing archive data.  Some templates do allow you to access historical data, but the access is much more limited than a "second copy" of WeatherCat running on another machine.  This idea has been revisited periodically because many WeatherCat users run the program on a dedicated machine, but would like to access the data on general purpose Mac.  Alas, it is considerable revision of WeatherCat and thus far, Stu (Stuart Ball, WeatherCat developer) hasn't seen sufficient interest to make expanding WeatherCat in that way worthwhile.

Sorry, Edouard

Thanks Edouard.

I'll take a more detailed look at some of the templates as per your suggestion (the Steel Series seems to be particularly well documented).

It would be great to have more functionality in the WC client - I hope Stu can consider this in future...

Cheers,
Tony.

Dasher689,

Tony, you might try VNC Viewer available free from the App Store on your iPads ( iOS 9.0 or later).  This will allow you to see near real-time display and remote control of the MacMini running WC.  I use this to display the screen of my headless MacMini which has the custom gauges and other items of interest configured. The remote control feature also permits selecting any of the tools including the Statistics page.

Regards,
David
