Small request: ordering stats in year by year
« on: December 15, 2019, 02:38:40 am »
Pretty much says it all. When reading stuff (for a spreadsheet say) every time the stats refresh it pops back up to the top of the page and precip is a bizarrely long way down.

Could we either have the ability to order them, or just have the "big there" of temp, precip and wind totals pinned to the top (or the most pertinent - max for temp, say).

Could create a file with this data. (Re: Small request)

Dear IanC and WeatherCat faithful,

Pretty much says it all. When reading stuff (for a spreadsheet say) every time the stats refresh it pops back up to the top of the page and precip is a bizarrely long way down.

Could we either have the ability to order them, or just have the "big there" of temp, precip and wind totals pinned to the top (or the most pertinent - max for temp, say).

I understand your problem.  I update my precipitation spreadsheet once a month, so I only need the rainfall for the previous month.  I can manage to grab that number before WeatherCat refreshes the data.

If you need to work on the year over year statistics, you might find it easier to create a text file with this data.  You can do this using WeatherCat's custom web feature.  You can read more about this starting on page 102 of the current WeatherCat manual.

This might seem a bit intimidating, but for your needs the template you require is about as simple as it can get.  You need a file with only this text:

STYEAROVERYEAR$

WeatherCat will process this tag into the table with all the year over year data that you can access from statistics.  WeatherCat will automatically save this as a text file, you can then work over that data at your leisure.

If you have any questions on how to do to this, by all means ask.  Many of us are comfortable with the WeatherCat custom web feature and will be glad to help you out.

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

After re-reading that sentence, is "big there" supposed to be "big three"?

Previously offered... thinking you were talking about yearly data for only a few of the dozens of bits WC collects:
Not sure how many years nor how many types of weather for each year you want. I assume you would start with your earliest full year of data, so you would need to run the following only once to get WC to list each year's data. I also assume you have already compiled prior years into a spreadsheet. After the end of each year, simply change the dates and let WC generate the new data.

1. If you already use a Custom Web, you can use the text below to just 'dump' the data to a file in ~/Library/Application Support/WeatherCatCustomWeb/ with whatever name you want for the page.

2. If you aren't making Custom Web pages, please copy the text in the WC Prefs->On-Line->Simple Web/Text "Notes:" and save it in a TextEdit file. You should then be able to replace the text with the text below. Keep or edit the name shown in the "Web Page Title:" box so you can find it easily. It should end up in basically the same path as shown in 1.

Individual Statistics queries basically consist of three "TAGS": (See pg. 206-207 of The Manual)
ITEM (26 items + special sensors)
   TYPE (6 items)
   PERIOD (11 items)

p. 213:
"Date ranges are specified as yyyy-mm-dd/yyyy-mm-dd. The time range runs from the first minute of the first date to the first minute-1 of the second date."

Maximum Temp for 2010:
STAT$TEMPERATURE:MIN:2010-01-01/2012-01-01$TEMPUNITS$

Would print Maximum Temp for 2010: -15?F for example.

Maximum Temp for 2010:STAT$TEMPERATURE:MIN:2010-01-01/2012-01-01$TEMPUNITS$:TIME$

Would print Maximum Temp for 2010: -15?F 12 December 2010 5:30 A.M. for example.

Obviously, you can change the ITEM for the other data points you want. Simply place these tag combinations in any order you want, starting with the one you want "on top".

Dear IanC, X-Air, Weatheraardvark, and WeatherCat faithful,

so modifying the actual program isn't going to happen.  Right?

Honestly, only our fearless leader can make that call.  Alas Stu (Stuart Ball, WeatherCat developer) has been seriously overwhelmed by his day job.  His company embarked on a make or break project over a year ago and I'm assuming that the struggle continues to be dogged.  Until Stu gets some more leisure time, WeatherCat is on the back burner.  I'm sure he desperately wants to get back to WeatherCat development, for him it is a real break and recreation.  So if we aren't seeing updates to WeatherCat, Stu is really under the gun.

Alas, such are da' conditions that prevail . . . . . .

Oh well, Edouard

I swing by their forum occasionally, that app has its warts as well.

That they do, however, they do fix those warts without complaining about just about everything under the sun.

Weather today is going to be 46 for the high ,  cold but there is this strange bright object in the East this morning that might melt off the frost on my car.  I don't have a garage.
