Moving Weather Cat to new Mac
« on: March 22, 2016, 03:39:46 PM »
My old mini is getting old and I want to move the station to a newer iMac I have from  my Mom when she passed away.  Is there a tutorial on doing this?

Great question. Yes, there is a Wiki article. I have used it three times and it works. Good luck.

I copied everything as per the wiki, but on the start-up the window came up to select the USB port, it seemed to hang up.  I force quit and tried again.  Same thing, hang up.  So, I rebooted and get the same hang-up everytime.  What to do now.

Another weird thing is when I force quit it, after a few seconds, starts up again and hangs.  Is there a way to stop this.  I'm going to try to install it again.

It just bounces in the dock.  Very frustrating.   BTW, this is a new installation of OS X 10.11.4 and I have a Davis Vantage Pro 2.  Any help would be appreciated.

Did you install the USB driver? (Re: Moving Weather Cat to new Mac)

Dear medgasman, Blick, and WeatherCat troubleshooters,

I copied everything as per the wiki, but on the start-up the window came up to select the USB port, it seemed to hang up.  I force quit and tried again.  Same thing, hang up.  So, I rebooted and get the same hang-up everytime.  What to do now.

Did you install the Silicon Labs USB driver on the new computer?  The instructions to move WeatherCat don't include that since not all stations require that step.

There are instructions on how to update your driver also on the Wiki:

I hope that solves your problem.

Cheers, Edouard

As Edouard notes, this is a problem with the SiliconLabs driver - it's locking up when you try to connect, which means you have to force quit WeatherCat. It also sounds like you have the monitor and relaunch WeatherCat option ticked in its preferences, which is why it's relaunching itself when you force quit it.

To turn this off, boot WeatherCat into safe mode (hold down the ctrl key whilst launching it from the Finder) - it'll open just the Backup manager and won't try to connect. From there you can open the Preferences, go to the Units/Misc 1 tab and turn off the monitor option.

You can also go to the Tools menu and hit 'Configure Station Comms' - this will cause the Comms window to open the next time you launch.

If you don't have the latest driver installed, download it and install it - if it still isn't working you may want to try connecting through a USB 2 hub - some people who have issues with the driver on 10.11 have reported this working.

Thank you all.  Your comments were spot on.  I will remember the CTL key from now on.  The only issue I had and to save others grief is to use the /dev/cu.slab_USBtoUART driver.  The other USB driver that I was trying, would not work and hung up.
