My weathercat down for 3 or 4 days
« on: March 12, 2016, 01:22:12 PM »
My iMac will be down for three or four days, starting Monday, for a minor repair at a shop. I am currently sending data to all of the available sites in weathercat. I know that some send emails when data has not been received for a few hours. Will my accounts be deleted by these sites for such a lengthy down time? Thanks for all ideas.

Chet:

I think you will be fine.

Weather Underground will suspend your account until it determines you are resuming data uploads. Then it will be automatically restore your account. Weathercloud and AWEKAS will both send you an email that your account is down. They will also both return to normal when they see you have resumed uploading. WU allows for automatic historical uploads (with the information in your data logger) when you reconnect your iMac. I wish all sites accommodated that feature.

Good Backup Solution

Chet, it might be more money than you are willing to spend, but something like a Meteobridge could "bridge" the gap for you. I use one to upload to all of my weather sites instead of WXCat for the very reason you mentioned - I don't want gaps in my (crappy) Wunderground account just because WXCat or my iMac aren't running for longer than the data logger will store.

Chet makes a really good point. If we are going to have our computer down for an extended time for whatever reason, short of setting up WXCat on an old machine temporarily, what are the options to get that data back into WXCat (not sites like WU or WXCloud)? Will a Davis logger store essentially the same data (every two or every five minutes) that could then be downloaded upon being re-attached?
A clear conscience is a great pillow.

Here is an insightful, short wiki article that addresses your question. http://wiki.trixology.com/index.php/Capacity_of_the_Davis_data-logger_to_store_weather_data_depending_on_the_chosen_sampling_interval

I just looked up the setting for sample frequency on my Vantage Vue; it is 30 minutes. Is that the default setting?

I don't know but you can change it in Tools | Station Hardware Options (when you get your iMac back from the shop). I have mine set for 15 minutes and have been debating for a month now whether to change it to 10 minutes. When you change it, the data in the logger is cleared out and you start over.

I will take a look at the Meteobridge option but first I am still reviewing dfw_pilot's excellent treatise on backup strategy in another thread on this forum. One thing at a time.

Most services won't accept historical data :(

Wunderground does however and WeatherCat will upload the missing data for you when it knows there's historical data to be uploaded (it hasn't been running for a while for example*).

*Assuming the option is enabled in the Wunderground preferences (it is by default).
