Any recommendations for a decent web hosting package? Apparently WeatherCat eats up a bit of bandwidth for any 'realtime' weather posting.  I could upgrade my present one, but I have to cancel the account and start a new one and if I am going to cancel the account and start a new one, I might as well shop first.

(not godaddy.  first issue was the website only went to september on the credit card dropdown and the second issue was a lack of response from them on issue number one. two for two, not interested.)

I agree to skip Godaddy. I've had Hostgator for the last 3+ years. Had Dogbark before that and they were great, but not cheap. However, like many small, personal services, they were bought out. As a matter of fact, 'consolidation' has been rampant for several years, making service of secondary importance to the merged companies. I do not get domain names from the hosting company, if you try to leave for another host, you may find you've never really 'owned' the domain. [rolleyes2]

I own my domain name.  I only used it to register but never transferred.  I use no-ip.com to put my domain anywhere I like.

I signed up for www.qth.com a bit ago, and love them so far. Not as cheap as name-cheap, but the owner Scott, is awesome for support. =)

More ideas?
« Reply #6 on: February 04, 2016, 05:40:53 AM »
May I bump this thread for any more ideas on a good shared host?

As I type this, my host, blueHost, has been down for hours (just my server) and there obviously is no backup server. I don't mind paying $10-$15/mo if it means more reliability, but I can't play with the big boys on a VPS, dedicated, or AWS Instance.

Thanks.

I've been using Hosting Matters for a year-and-a-half with no problems. They have three shared packages, I use the middle one which is $8/mo.

p.s. I tried blueHost a couple of years ago and my ISP blacklisted them shortly after I signed up.

Update
« Reply #9 on: February 04, 2016, 07:29:06 PM »
Thanks guys.

As an update, when the server came back up, my access was black-listed because of WeatherCat! After a few hours on the phone/hold, it was discovered that I was automatically blacklisted because of my 5 minute website updates, and my 30 second "live gauges" updates from the realtimegaugesWC.txt file. They saw it as a script that was malware or attempting to log in to the shared server. This WeatherCat hobby is addictive and causing me stress! Now I $pend more money running my computer 24/7 and may now have to change web hosts. What's next?

Anyway, thanks for the links. awilltx, I see you have 30 second updates with the steel gauges, too. May I assume that HostingMatters hasn't objected to your rapid updates? If so, I may give them a try when my contract is up. Thanks again,

Never had a problem or complaint from them about 30 second updates. They also don't count ftp uploads against your monthly bandwidth usage. Kind of nice.

Wow, that is very nice. I'm going to bookmark them and look them up in a few months when my hosting account is up for renewal. Thanks again!

I decided to go with Hosting Matters and had trouble FTPing from CyberDuck.  It was about 2100hrs and I sent an email about the issue and their response was quick and adequate.  Happy camper!  Up and running.

Wow, I didn't know CyberDuck was still going! I had some problems with it and switched over to Transmit for ftp a long while ago.

Glad you're liking Hosting Matters so far. I've only dealt with support a couple of times, but they seem to be on top of things.

+1 for Transmit

Even more geeky fun may be had with Transmit iOS wth TouchID security.
