Suddenly can't connect via FTP to website
« on: December 16, 2015, 02:25:33 PM »
Weathercat has suddenly stopped FTPing to my website. I'm able to FTP to my site from the same computer via FileZilla to my site no problem. This computer has been FTPing for several years, so this is coming out of nowhere. When looking into the log, I see:

FTP: upload starting
FTP: uploading image.jpg
FTP: curl: (67) Access denied: 530
FTP: FTP Error (67) Login Error check username and password
FTP: Error: 911: could not upload (null) Aborting upload

The username and password are correct. Any ideas what's going on? I've updated to WC 2.2.2, and update the OS to the latest (Yosemite 10.10.5). I can't get El Capitan on this machine evidently (Core2duo?).

Check keychain? (Re: Suddenly can't connect via FTP to website)

Dear Matt and WeatherCat troubleshooters,

Sounds like your login and/or password data has gotten corrupted somehow.  It is rare but does happen.  The first thing to try is simply to re-enter the information into WeatherCat and see if that clears up the problem.  If not, check to see what is in your OS X keychain.  WeatherCat stores that access data there.  Perhaps there is a problem with WeatherCat getting permission to access your FTP info.

Cheers, Edouard

Edouard,

Many thanks for your reply. I checked the keychain value (it appears to only store the password) and it appeared to be OK. But that was to be expected since I had already re-wrote the login information and saved those values earlier, so I would assume that if they were corrupted, the re-write would have un-corrupted them. My web host claims there's no block on my IP or any other thing out of the ordinary.

Reading other posts about this issue, it seems there have a been a few times this has occurred. One user simply solved it by going to a different host which would point to the original host as the problem, not WC. I'm thinking of going down that path and see what happens. I'm pretty much out of ideas.

Check Wiki hints? (Re: Suddenly can't connect via FTP to website)

Dear Matt and WeatherCat troubleshooters,

Sorry you haven't been able to clear this up.  Indeed it is possible that your web hosting provider has changed something and that's the source of the problem.

You might have a look at this article on the WeatherCat Wiki about troubleshooting FTP connections:

http://wiki.trixology.com/index.php/Troubleshooting_FTP_connection_problems

One possibility is that your FTP connection wasn't strictly correct, but the FTP server on your web host was able to deal with it.  For whatever reason, now it needs a 100% correct string in order to work.

Best of luck with this and do let us know what you learn.  It might end up being something we need to add to that Wiki article.

Cheers, Edouard

Thanks, Edouard. It looks like you (and my suspicion) were right. It turned out that my web host, iPage.com, had changed the FTP connection requirements. I had to find it buried in the fine print on the FTP dashboard. They no longer were accepting connecting to our directory path; they wanted "ftp.ipage.com". So ultimately, I found I had to enter "ftp://ftp.ipage.com" which isn't the path to my directory, as WeatherCat directs.

Hopefully my station will keep uploading for another 5 years without a hitch.

Dear Matt and WeatherCat Internet troubleshooters,

Thanks, Edouard. It looks like you (and my suspicion) were right. It turned out that my web host, iPage.com, had changed the FTP connection requirements. I had to find it buried in the fine print on the FTP dashboard. They no longer were accepting connecting to our directory path; they wanted "ftp.ipage.com". So ultimately, I found I had to enter "ftp://ftp.ipage.com" which isn't the path to my directory, as WeatherCat directs.

So is your web hosting provider automatically putting the pages in the right directory even if you are no longer specifying the path?  Indeed, this service has done something odd to you.

Hopefully my station will keep uploading for another 5 years without a hitch.

Yes indeed!  These services are too complex to fuss with for very long.  I wish the sys-admins of such outfits would accept the wisdom of: "if it ain't broke - don't fix it!"

Cheers, Edouard

Edouard,

Yes, the files are going to the right directory. I'm assuming that because my id and password are provided, they point the ftp client to my root. Anyone going forward using iPage and WC may have some trouble based on WC's directing the user to provide the path. I've decided to move my domain anyway to Godaddy. I've used them before and was generally pleased.

Matt

I'm using GoDaddy also and they get the job done.  Sorry that you have that hassle but at least you have a plan to solve your problems!

Good luck in getting everything back to normal!
