Problem after El Capitano update
« on: October 02, 2015, 03:15:30 PM »
Knew I shouldn't of done it but I updated to El Capitan today.
Once done Weathercat was just hanging. I was using version 1.2.4
Thought I would be clever and download the latest version of weathercat version 2.
Weather cat still hangs.
I have now mixed up and moved weather cat folders about.
Any ideas how I can get weather cat to work again.
Not that bothered about historical data just want it to work and so I can keep tweeting on the hour to my near 10,000 followers on Twitter.
At present I just have a weathercat bouncing logo in my dock.

Thanks for any replies.

OK latest update I get this message "Software Change Back up"

Your data at:
 '/Users/apple/Library/WeatherCatData'
will be backed up to:
'/Users/apple/Library/WeatherCatData_Backup_Fri_02_Oct_2015_1532V124B11'

Press 'OK' to continue, 'Quit' to exit WeatherCat or 'Skip Backup' to continue without performing the back-up (not recommended).

Options are Skip Backup Quit or OK

Any ideas ?

I tried skip back up. A few things were happening but I now get this message

"Stationpluginmanager : Trying to connect to Davis Vantage/Pro/Pro2/Vue/Envoy....."

I have a davis Vantage Pro 1 connect via USB.

Sounds like the SiliconLabs driver isn't installed - you can get the latest one at:

Just downloaded later drivers and restarted iMac and I am back to just a bouncing weathercat icon in the dock.

Weathercat 2.0 just gets a bouncing logo in the dock.

Weathercat 1.24 gets the above software back up message. I press skip backup and updating file statistic files takes place going back to 2009/5 This takes a few mins. Then Initialising sub-system. Starting stats.

Then as we were "Stationpluginmanager : Trying to connect to Davis Vantage/Pro/Pro2/Vue/Envoy....."

Thanks for the reply.

USB connection is straight into my iMac and not via a hub.

If you leave it long enough, it'll eventually give up and present the Station Communication screen (could be up to 10 minutes). Check the Silicon Labs serial port is selected there.

Played about a bit last night and no joy.

I downloaded WC latest version 2 on a guest user account and on installation again it was not recognising the station ?

Hope this helps and thanks for trying to sort this out.

That's a good indication the USB driver has locked up. Try rebooting the computer, if that doesn't work, try with no station plugged in, then when at the Station Comms window plug the station in and rescan the ports.

Unplugged USB and from station.

Got to WS23xx driver initialising.

Weather station not found.

Could not find weather station. Hit Ok to set up the weather station communications.

Pressed OK and the OK button went blue and nothing has happened.

Tried this again and got to weather stations communication set up.

On rescan ports it defaults to /dev/cu.Bluethooth-Incoming-Port

I changed this to /dev/cu.SLAB_USBtoUART and pressed done.

Testing this can take a few minutes.

Currently hanging though on one attempt I did get to some dials showing but no data. I tested my Twitter Uploader and that worked but with all values obviously at 0.

Looks like the SiliconLabs driver isn't working properly on your system - check to see if they have an update for 10.11. Just in case, also check the connections/hardware/logger - sometimes the loggers pop out of the back of the console.

All connections etc Ok have even tried with two different USB leads.

Oh well just have to sit tight and see when an update pops up.

One other thing to check on the hardware front is the console batteries - if these get low (and they do, even if running off the mains adaptor), then they can drag the console voltage down low enough that it can no longer communicate.

Never got around to trying batteries.

I have been rebooting etc and just now I tried via a USB hub again.

I proceeded with no back up and it went past recognising the station.

On what seemed like forever stuck on launching imaginary threads I noticed the dock icon was displaying the weather data correct from my station.

I clicked on tools and gauges and after another pause the gauges came up correct.

I ran the Twitter uploader and correct data was posted in a tweet.

Not sure what corrected the problem and I dare not switch weathercat off at the moment as it did look dodgy when opening.

Below is a reply from the Silicon Labs community

Many thanks for the help and hopefully things will run smoother now.

Hi Faymondo,

We've gotten a few complaints of CP210x drivers malfunctioning in 10.11, but none of the issues so far have ended up being the driver itself. From our perspective, the driver is behaving the same as in 10.10, and we haven't personally observed any failures. A customer does have one outstanding issue - the driver fails when the device is connected directly to one of their Macbook Pros (and works on all of their other Macs), but we haven't been able to reproduce this one either. In that case, the problem was solved by routing the CP210x device through an external USB Hub. That might be something that you can try.

Otherwise, it's pretty difficult to debug third-party products using our CP210x devices: they could be using custom hardware, drivers, etc. that we have no visibility into. You may want to try contacting Davis, or whoever makes Weather Cat, to see if any other customers are seeing this issue. More information on troubleshooting these sorts of issues can be found here: http://community.silabs.com/t5/Interface-Knowledge-Base/Troubleshooting-a-Product-Using-a-CP210x-USB...

Regards,
Brian
