My cheap back-up to my main ground gauge cup that is...........


The schools here broke up on Thursday for the summer holidays, so yesterday we reverted to typical UK summer holiday weather 

Now had 56.6 mm ( 2.22 inch) in 24 hours, found out the back-up ground gauge to my Met Office ground gauge holds exactly 50 mm, and not a drop more.

Sounds a bit like a (government) committee-designed device!
"The thermometer should have a range of zero to 100?F. It will be cheaper to have fewer markings and it will look more symmetrical!"
"The rain gauge should measure up to 50 MM. It will look nice next to our thermometer. We can simply paste a note on them to be read at least every four hours."

Maybe you can get another gauge and mount it directly under the other one? That way, when the upper one overflows, it will drip into the bottom none.

After a hopeful June, the monsoons have given Orinda the grand total of 0.02" of rain (0.5mm) thus far in July.  

It just ain't fair I tell ya'!
