Heat Index is a little confused
« on: July 13, 2015, 01:07:17 AM »
Maybe it's the Arizona heat but as you can see the Heat Index starting with May has been replaced by a string of numbers.
I reinstalled the WC software but that didn't correct the problem.

Any thoughts on how I can get the true values to populate?

Thanks

Hi Drewaz
Looks like  to me  your WeatherCatData.cat.hrs file are corrupted

Shut down WC and go the Library/WeatherCatData/ Location 1/2015 and move your .hrs files for May, June July to another folder on your desktop call it old .hrs so you still have them then restart WeatherCat it will reproduce new .hrs file and see if that corrects it.

cheers

Normally that'd be good advice - however, before trying that, a heat index bug was fixed in version 2.2.0 (just released) - give it a try with that.

Greetings All,

Discussions about weather comfort are incomplete with just temp. RH is also needed, especially in hot humid places east of the Rockies.
Google pointed me to "heat index" and I then found a calculator from NOAA and an equation

http://www.srh.noaa.gov/images/ffc/pdf/ta_htindx.PDF

 HI = -42.379 + 2.04901523T + 10.14333127R - 0.22475541TR - 6.83783x10-3T 2 - 5.481717x10-2R 2 + 1.22874x10-3T 2R + 8.5282x10-4TR2 - 1.99x10-6T 2R 2

with T in F and R in percent rel humidity, apparently valid above 80F.
Then I checked on this forum and found that my WC calculates it for me. Very convenient and I can plot it. Attached is my heat index of today, about 20C and 75 RH, in cool wet Switzerland
Isn't weather fun!
Irving

I investigated "Heat Index" several days ago trying to add a Rule in the Current Conditions Calculator tool. Not sure what formula Stu uses, but NOAA uses an "amalgamation" (a governmental term for 'conglomeration') of several formulas (or formulae, if you want :) ). I know we talked about this on the forums last year; the local TV "weathermen" tend to emphasize the "Heat Index" without ever defining it, especially if the crime rate for the day is down. [rolleyes2]

BTW, one cannot, apparently, use the only 'Heat Index' in the list of items in the Current Conditions Calculator tools. The only choice is "Calculated Heat Index" and it seems to have a desire to auto enter values just by leaving the entry box and/or clicking back into it. I'm waiting on the end of the well deserved vacation of the developer to bring him into the discussion. We might as well ask him to explain his heat index formula, if he wants.

Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system

Too many watches . . . (Re: Heat Index)
« Reply #7 on: July 27, 2016, 10:59:56 PM »
Dear Irving, Blick, X-Air, and WeatherCat experts in precision measurement,

What WeatherCat calls the heat index is only one of several techniques to attempt to capture human discomfort in a single number.  Here is a thread describing another index based on a different methodology:

http://athena.trixology.com/index.php?topic=941.msg8278#msg8278

In the end, my general skepticism of trying to boil all the complexity of human physiology and psychology into a single number is best defended by the repeated attempts to come up with such a number.  I've used this quote before on this forum and it hits the nail on the head I think:

A man with a watch knows the time, a man with two watches is never sure . . . . . .  :D

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

I don't know what that single number is, but I am pretty sure it is preceded by $, ? or ?, but probably not .

Or to paraphrase for us...
A man with a thermometer knows the temperature, a man with two thermometers is never sure

There are lots of these derived human comfort type's about.

If your favourite isn't supported directly by WeatherCat, you can get it to calculate it via a synthetic channel given the relevant function.
