Total Solar Radiation W/m^2
« on: June 07, 2015, 05:12:18 PM »
Is it possible to compute the following:

Total Solar Power since installing Solar Sensor: 1 234 567 w^m2
(If I would have a solar power unit to earn solar energy, how much would I have earned last month, last year, year over year)

 ???

Cheers,
Reinhard

Hi Reinhard
 I have this in my statistics: Solar Radiation (W/m^2)   Max:     28 days: 1262     7 days: 1262     24hrs: 1123     Today: 1123 Average: 28 days: 202.77   7 days: 184.35   24hrs: 264.80   Today: 341.25
This is for the month of June

I this what you would want?

cheers

Hi Randall,

no, not exactly. I do have this in my stats, too. What I want to compute is how much electric power (juice) I can get out of today, last week, etc.

Cheers,
Reinhard

Or, in other words, how much electric power the sun produces in my area in a defined period (day, week, month, year, year over year).

 :)

Reinhard

Hi Reinhard
Are you going to be running some solar panels?
I been thinking about about going completely off grid with solar panels and batteries and inverters so that would indeed be helpful for me also

cheers

Dear Randall, Reinhard, and WeatherCat wilderness adventurers . . . .

 ;) . . . . Really!?!?  Did you have something like this in mind? . . .

Did you have a particular Airstream trailer in mind?  The solar panels on this one don't look too bad but I don't like a 2003 trailer.  Much too immature for my trusty wagon!! . . . . .  [biggrin]

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

P.S. There is a real story behind this picture.  If you are curious you can read it here:

Looks like much more bark than bite though . . . .

At Edouard
No I'm am going bigger my whole house 20 solar panels, 24 6volts 420 amp batteries 3 48 volt 15000 amp inverters which are 240 volts

Sorry Reinhard didn't mean to take over your post

cheers

Something like 'STAT$SOLAR:TOTAL:TODAY$' (which would add up the solar radiation across the period)
(Currently, you can do AVERAGE over a period - this year for example is 85 W/m^2 for my location).

This could be used both on web-pages and in custom channels (as of 2.1.0 queries can be made from channels).

Is that what you had in mind?

Apologies to Reinhard for hijacking the thread. I have been researching net metering with solar panels but my preliminary investigation is not looking like this is a good move in my case. I would be laying out about US$25,000-30,000 with a very long payback period. So now I am looking into a solar water heater. Much cheaper and 2-3 year payback. Out here in the mountains, we use propane to heat water and it is expensive.

No problem!  :D

Yes, something like that would be great! So what I want to know is the amount of Gigawatts (  ;D ) I could collect out of solar power in a given period. Just tested the TOTAL out and it returns '0' for every requested period (TODAY, THISWEEK, THISMONTH, THISYEAR, ALLTIME). So I think this is not implemented yet?

Cheers,
Reinhard

Dear Randall, Stu, Blick, Reinhard, and WeatherCat sun worshipers, . . .

No I'm am going bigger

In the voice of Foghorn Leghorn: . . . Uh, that was a joke son, . . . . gag that is!  [biggrin]

Sounds expensive?

;) . . . . Actually no, compared to the cost of the Airstream trailer itself, the solar panels are cheap!!! . . .  [lol2]

I have been researching net metering with solar panels but my preliminary investigation is not looking like this is a good move in my case. I would be laying out about US$25,000-30,000 with a very long payback period.

Cost aside, at least around Orinda there is another potential concern.  I've seen a number of solar panel installations around here, and the workmanship sure didn't impress me.  They are simply laying the solar panels on the existing roof.  It wasn't clear they even were searching for the underlying roof supports.  With this sort of installation, if the roof leaks, all the panels would have to be removed before any repairs were made.

Another thing I've seen twice is technicians coming back a few weeks after the installation to repair something.

These are just observations around the neighborhood, but it stands to reason that lots of companies are jumping into this new industry and none of them have many years of installation experience.  I think it would be a very difficult task separate out the companies you can really trust from the "snakes in the grass."

Caveat emptor . . . .

Cheers, Edouard

Here's an idea you may be interested in, Reinhard.

It has been discontinued, but there should be plenty of them out there as used, or a similar competing product from a different vendor.

Ideally, if you could just find someone who already has one and would perform the service at a reasonable cost, and you're set!
