FYI: Weather Underground doing some database "stuff"
« on: May 06, 2015, 10:52:19 PM »
Dear WeatherCat data submission junkies, . . . .

This morning my WC Status Growler AppleScript started producing a message that I don't think I've never seen "in the wild."

The errors were intermittent so it wasn't like WeatherCat had corrupted my Weather Underground login information.  A more likely explanation is that they were doing some database maintenance that took down the login database tables for brief periods of time.

So if you see any weirdness in your Weather Underground submissions . . . . .  mostly likely no adjustment of your TV set is required . . . .

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

P.S. So how many of you are actually old enough to remember seeing on your TV a message like: "No adjustment of your TV set is required . . . " ?

P.P.S.  For bonus points, how many of you still remember why TV networks felt a need to inform their viewers of that sort of message?

I am getting the same error in the WeatherCat Status Tool. About every 15 seconds WC is telling me I have a Password/ID Error. It does not look like I am missing any uploaded date on the WU site, so I think this message is bogus and is a precursor to WU asking us to pay them to collect our data.  :)

This morning, WU seems to have sorted itself out. I am no longer seeing the problem in the WeatherCat status window. It looks like I sent about 300 packets to WU that were not received. But again, no data seems to be missing on the WU site. I am using RapidFire.

How much money did you send them? You mention "packets". Is that what we use to send them money? Can it all be in one dollar bills? Do they provide change if I send large denominations? [cheer]

Dear Blick, xairbusdriver, and WeatherCat "overgrown children," . . . .

 ;)

In the voice of Marvin the Martin:  "I'm not angry, just terribly, terribly hurt!"

Ya' mean I'm the only one old enough to remember:  "No adjustment of your TV set is required . . . " ?

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

I remember the first time I was allowed to stay up late enough to see the waving (black & white, of course) US flag and hearing the Star Spangled Banner. After that, we "enjoyed" the test pattern...

Are you talking about Rod Serling and his opening spiel for the Twilight Zone? And, did that directive come about due to the War of the Worlds broadcast?

The TV of Tomorrow (1953) . . . . (Was: Weather Underground)

Dear Blick, xairbusdriver, Herb, and WeatherCat "overgrown children,"

Well, nobody seems to have remembered the answer to the bonus question, but you all still deserve a prize so here it is.  The 1953 MGM cartoon "The T.V. of tomorrow" directed by Tex Avery:

http://dai.ly/x4idel

Tex Avery is considered to be one of the great innovators during the golden age of theatrical cartoons and many consider Tex Avery's "A Wild Hare" cartoon to be first true Bugs Bunny cartoon because of refinements Tex made to the rabbit's voice and attitude.

Enjoy!  Edouard  [cheers1]

P.S. After seeing this cartoon, does anyone remember why stations were using the phrase: "No adjustment of your TV set is required . . . " ?

I had to look it up to remember the title, but the answer to the bonus question is ? https://youtu.be/8CtjhWhw2I8

EDIT: Oops, this was the answer to the 1st question. The bonus question I may have already answered with the reference to War of The Worlds.
