Export explanation
« on: April 06, 2014, 11:36:08 PM »
Can someone explain the these two columns.  The first Precip / Hr and second Precip Total.

In the 2nd column I know I didn't receive rain over and over with the same amount. .01,.01 etc. So what does this column really mean?

1st column should be total per hour but what hour? .32, .12 and .04 are all with in 30 minutes.
I am probably just being stupid but I can't see the logic here.  I was assuming I could total either column and get the total rainfall but that is not the case.

Thanks,
Ken

Rate and total rainfall to moment. (Re: Export explanation)
« Reply #1 on: April 07, 2014, 10:47:08 PM »
Hi Ken and WeatherCat fans,

Can someone explain the these two columns.  The first Precip / Hr and second Precip Total.

In the 2nd column I know I didn't receive rain over and over with the same amount. .01,.01 etc. So what does this column really mean?

Column 2 has the total rainfall that has fallen to that point in that day, so it has the total you are seeking already - no addition necessary.  Just pick up the last value before the day change and that is the total rainfall for that day.

1st column should be total per hour but what hour? .32, .12 and .04 are all with in 30 minutes.

Column 1 is the rate of rain falling.  At the moment of the data sample: rain was falling at a rate of say 0.32" per hour.  This rate is constantly changing.  However, the way to think about it is - if the rainfall rate was steady for an hour - in this case 0.32" of rain would have been accumulated by the end of that hour.  It is the same as expressing speed at say 60 miles per hour.  You won't travel 60 miles unless you maintain that speed for the whole hour.

Hope this helps.

Cheers, Edouard

Edouard
Thanks for clearing things up.

Column 1 is titled Precipitation Per Hour and I didn't take that to be a rate per hour but how much fell in the hour.  Maybe a title of Precipitation Rate/Hr would be a little clearer.  At least I know now.

I just didn't see Column 2 as a running total.  It is interesting to note that the total amount reverts back to 0 at 23:00 and not midnight.  At least that is what happened on the day I was using as an example.

If I run an hourly report instead of a 10 minute report the Precip. totals for that day are off by .01.  Hourly report is higher.  Wouldn't think this should happen.
