Thanks, Jace, for the new word -- numpty.  [lol] It's much more useful than the other words I know. I've been calling lawmakers "booger-eatin' stupit", but numpty saves me a lot of syllables.

pedantic |pɪˈdantɪk|
adjective
excessively concerned with minor details or rules; overscrupulous: his analyses are careful and even painstaking, but never pedantic.

numpty |ˈnʌmpti|
noun (pl.numpties) Scottish informal
a stupid or ineffectual person.
ORIGIN 1980s: from obsolete numps ?a stupid person?, of unknown origin.

eejit |ˈiːdʒɪt|
noun informal
Irish and Scottish form of idiot. don't stand there like a gormless eejit!

gormless |ˈgɔːmlɪs|
adjective Brit. informal
lacking sense or initiative; foolish. a constantly grinning, rather gormless boy.

:-[ I feel really gormless for asking. This computer's built in British English Dictionary had it all. All I had to do was show some initiative and right click on the word and it would have told me, but look what I would have missed out on!  [lol]

I think I need to come in on this to give a Welsh perspective on it. True its derived from Ireland and Scotland as Jace said, but he then goes on to say its not an UK (English) word. There are four countries that make up the UK -Ireland,Scotland,Wales and England. So it should have read a word used in England.

Other common sayings as meaning "eejit" -  a crack in the welding: a slate missing in the roof: a sandwich short of a picnic: a halfpenny short of a shilling:

Not to be a gormless pedantic eejit or a numpty, but Ireland is, in actual fact, not part of the U.K., but rather, its own country. Northern Ireland, which is yet another country and quite different than Ireland, is part of the U.K. In fact, the actual name of the U.K. is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Well, now I've got to ask, Blick. Are you Irish or Scott? And, where online can I order a genuine kilt? Always wanted one.

Anyone else Irish or Scottish?

I gather Gwyfyn1 is Welsh?

My paternal Grandfather had the nickname, Dutch. Though I don't know if he came by it honest or not. I guess the name Vickers could be English or Dutch.  [lol]

Oh thank you Herb; at last someone on this forum has asked a question to which I know the answer!
I'm Irish on me father's side and Scottish on me mother's. To further confuse the issue, I was born in America, lived in Northern Ireland, the Netherlands and Flemish Belgium, speak Dutch and have a fierce pride in and love for all five countries. For those of you who are playing along at home, those are Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium and America. Although unlikely, I would love to see any one of those countries win the World Cup.

A very red face!!! You are corrrect Blic, my fault in not sitting down to think.  Being a fervent Welshman, and having relatives in Cork and friends in County Mayo, and my wife's family from Deurne/ Bakel area of the Nederlands, nationality is important to me.

This has been hilarious and educational all at the same time!  ;D

I'm a UK mutt, in that I'm from all over the isles. Lots of Scots, Irish, English, and Welsh (Morris is derived from a Welsh derogatory term for having Moorish blood.) But all my ancestors have been here so long that I'm just a 13th generation American farm boy.

A very interesting group we have here! I feel blessed to be a participant with such good company. It makes me want to hop a jet and go visit the northern isles and the Netherlands and Belgium. What diversity we have from weather watching!

Yet, no one knows where to buy a genuine Scottish kilt online. Guess I'm stuck wearing blue jeans. It's just as well. I wasn't sure what to do with my iPhone anyway.  [lol2]

Here you go, Herb: The Utilikilt http://www.utilikilts.com

My old boss and his twin purchased the entire traditional Scot outfit with blouse, kilt, sporran, etc. for the brother's wedding. It was quite expensive if I recall.

Herb

If looking for a kilt, just do an online search, you will be very surprised  at the number of companies in the US selling kilts.

Personally I bought a fairly cheap medium weight kilt, made of wool and 8 yards of material, but not hand made, hand made would cost around ?300. The accessories I bought were the best I could afford, hand made belt buckle, quality leather belt, silver hand made kilt pin, hand made sgian dudh.

Good place to look on-line for kilts and accessories is for Canadian shops, some real craftsmen out there making some great things for kilts.

Phones are not a great problem, some weird and wonderful sporrans have been made specifically to solve that problem.

If your really stuck for a kilt, try eBay, usually some very good new kilts for sale from companies, I would steer clear of lightweight polyester kilts, look for machine made, medium weight 8 yards wool. You should probably get a good kilt like that for say $60 or so.

Steve - blouse ? Blouse ! Surely you meant shirt, or even a Jacobean Gillie shirt.

Lang may yer lum reek gents.

Thanks Steve & Jace!

Steve, I like the all cotton ones, despite that traditional kilts are wool. A bit pricy though!

Jace, I looked around eBay, but only saw the polyester ones from UK. Didn't spend much time there though. Had a dental appointment. Root canal and new crown. Uggg? been sufferin' the last few days. Think I'm over it now. I'll get back to searching later when I've got more money to spend. Don't know why I want one. I'm just a non conformist Arkansas hillbilly, I guess! Lol!

Thanks again,
Herb

Hi Herb and WeatherCat fans,

Had a dental appointment. Root canal and new crown. Uggg? been sufferin' the last few days. Think I'm over it now.

Ouch!  Definitely no fun.  Hope indeed you have gotten over the worst of it.

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]
