WeatherCat and Mavericks
« on: January 18, 2014, 03:53:34 PM »
Hello,
I have just installed WeatherCat as a trial on my Mavericks machine and having a load of bother.
When first installed all seemed to working well but overnight WeatherCat lost connection and I seem unable to start the program as all I get is "Application not responding".
Does WeatherCat work OK with Mavericks? I have installed Silicon Labs USB driver.

Hello, and welcome to the WeatherCat forum!

Yes, several of us are using WeatherCat and the latest version of Mavericks without incident. However, here was a thread with a similar problem. Give Stu's suggestions a try and see if that helps.

Dear steviegal, Steve, and WeatherCat welcoming committee,

First things first, welcome to the WeatherCat forum!!

Hello,
I have just installed WeatherCat as a trial on my Mavericks machine and having a load of bother.
. . . .
Does WeatherCat work OK with Mavericks? I have installed Silicon Labs USB driver.

WeatherCat has its own Wiki that has convenient little bits of information like troubleshooting tips for Davis Weather stations:

http://wiki.trixology.com/index.php/Davis

One thing to check is that you have the latest version of the Silicon Labs USB driver.  Instructions on checking that are to be found in that Wiki article.

Best of luck getting your station to get along with da' Cat!!  [cat]

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the welcome, I have deleted and re-installed WeatherCat and all seems a lot better.
This might seem a dumb question but if my mac goes to sleep does WeatherCat still function in the background or does WeatherCat sleep as well?

Thanks

Steve

Best not to let Mac sleep (Re: WeatherCat and Mavericks)

Dear Steve and WeatherCat fans,

This might seem a dumb question but if my mac goes to sleep does WeatherCat still function in the background or does WeatherCat sleep as well?

This is case where you can't have your cake and eat it too.  If you Mac is asleep, no applications can run.  Moreover WeatherCat can have problems re-establishing communications with a Davis station.  Stu has added some code to try to automatically reconnect, but it is dicey.

If you want to have your computer go to sleep to save power use, it is best to quit WeatherCat beforehand.  You might want to schedule the periods of sleeping so that you can do this automatically.

Many of us WeatherCat "power" users prefer to run our computers 24/7.  This allows us to upload data continuously to all weather sites.  In particular the CWOP program expects you to upload continuously.  Also there are some facilities that cannot work any other way.  For example, my WC Storm Monitor and WC ET Reporter AppleScripts need to run all the time to report their data correctly.

Hopefully some food for thought,

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

We do, however, let the display go to sleep.

Thanks to all for your help and advice, all the initial problems I had seem to stem from my mac going to sleep.
All appears to be running OK now and very impressed with WeatherCat, now to try a new template.

Thanks again

Steve

Hi everyone - apologies but this is really bugging me after 4 days:

My weather station is remote, and I visit every 3 months or so and download historic data - so not your average WeatherCat user. In January updated data before leaving, using my trusty MacBook Pro 17" running MountainLion. I connect to my Davis Pro2 console using a Keyspan USB/serial adapter to the data logger. Has always worked impeccably.

Since last visit have changed to a new MacBook Pro Retina running Mavericks; WeatherCat updated to 1.24 Build 11; WeatherCat runs OK without a station connected. Downloaded latest SiLabs driver but cannot connect to station now I am here.

In the past, the Keyspan connection automatically appeared in the Network Prefs page; in Mavericks it does not.
In the About this Mac hardware list it appears as Keyspan USA-19H under USB 3.0 Hi-speed Bus. When WeatherCat is started, cannot find station, and no USB option is available for comms port (only /dev/cu.Bluetooth-Incoming Port and  /dev/cu.Bluetooth-Modem).

Have tried all the options in System Prefs Network; tried Rescan Ports; replace batteries in console; tried complete shutdown and wait with power disconnected; tried reinstalling WeatherCat and the Silabs drivers - with and without the USB plugged in ...

Any bright ideas please - what am I missing?

Hi Skip,
If you are connecting via a Keyspan, you're going to need updated drivers for that (the SiliconLabs driver is used with the Davis USB based logger).

Thanks - but done that - several times and still doesn't find my Davis console.

The latest I can find is OK up to 10.8 (v3.1) from "CP210x USB to UART Bridge VCP Drivers" - nothing for Mavericks 10.9?

Silicon Labs isn't driver for Keyspan. (Re: WeatherCat and Mavericks)

The "CP210x USB to UART Bridge VCP Drivers" isn't for a keyspan serial connection.  It is for the later USB data logger for Davis stations.  The driver you mention works fine for those later Davis stations.  Unfortunately, support for the older USB to Serial dongles is increasingly hard to find.

However, if your Keyspan dongle is recent enough, you might try this page and see if their drivers work:

http://www.tripplite.com/support/downloads/tab/2

You need to select, Software, Drivers, and Keyspan and that brings up some drivers including one that claims to be Mavericks compatible.

Good luck,

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]
