Show Historical Data in Year Over Year Statistics
« on: January 12, 2014, 01:08:41 AM »
Hi all, I am relatively new to WC after moving from WD/Fusion/ Windows7 after a hard drive failure.  I have been slowly importing my historical data from Weather Underground and I can bring up statistics and query these months, but past the previous 2 months, no other months show up in the Year Over Year statistics view.  How can I get the previous months to show up?

Thanks,

Dave

Dear Dave and WeatherCat fans,

First, let me welcome you to the WeatherCat forum!

Unfortunately, I've run WeatherCat since I started up my weather station, so I don't know anything about importing data.  I have never heard of problems with this import routine, but I don't think it has been used very often.  Perhaps someone else can offer some insights.

I think you'll have to be patient and wait for Stuart Ball (the WeatherCat developer) to chime in with any ideas he might have.  If you are bold and curious, you could take a look at the data files the importer is generating and compare them to current data.  The data files are text files that can be edited (not that this is advised) and there is information on the file locations and formats in the "WeatherCat and Data" section of the manual starting on page 156.  Perhaps you can at least check to see if there are any differences in the way the data is shown in the files.

Glad you have found WeatherCat though.  Hope indeed you will come to enjoy it as much as us regulars do!  :)

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Hi Dave,

Welcome to WC!

One thing that might be getting you is WC will generate "hrs" files (for statistics) sequentially from the oldest month to newest.  If there is a gap in the records it will stop.  So if you converted Jan and Feb 2009 and then your next records are for December 2013 then your statistics will not fully build for the newest data.

I hope that makes sense.  If you are slowly converting I would suggest working backwards from newest to oldest and see how that works.

Good luck!

Jay

The previous posts pretty much cover it; the only thing I can add is to note that the units used in WeatherCat's data files are metric/ISO type units - i..e temperature is in Centigrade, precipitation in mm's, pressure in millBars/hPa, wind speed in km/h etc.

Thanks all for the inputs.  I started importing going backwards from most recent, ie December, then November.  I have WC data for January.   I read through all the posts regarding importing, and downloaded an excel spreadsheet that had been created to move WD data to WC.  I modified this spreadsheet for my Weather Underground data, and put it in the proper text file format for WC in the Data folder.  I can query the month of November data, I can see it by day, it shows up in the records tool, so I know it is formated properly and WC is reading it.  December which I imported, shows up in the Year over Year, but not November.  I read somewhere that WC will only load the last 2 months of data unless it needs the data.  I am wondering if the Year over Year page will not display data that is older than 2 months old that has been imported and not created by WC.

Hi Dave,

I am not familiar with the WD to WC spreadsheet method, but if it similar to other methods make sure WC is turned off and delete all of the ".hrs" files in your /Users/{your_user_name}/Library/WeatherCatData/Location1/{year_being_converted} directory.  Once WC restarts it will rebuild these files which are the basis of the year over year statistics.  If that does not work perhaps others will have some more ideas.
