Hi Randall and WeatherCat fans,

Ok my VP2 anemometer is only 2 1/2 months old now the wind direction is only showing due north but is moving outside with the wind.

Bummer dude!  That's a nasty blow!  :(

Odds are that it is a hardware failure and you'll have to get Davis to replace or repair it.  However, I can't help but ask, could the extreme cold have anything to to do with it?

Cheers, Edouard

If you can get at it, bring down the sensor and check to see if the set screw has come loose.  On the anemometer, which is on the bottom, the cups might fall off if their screw is loose, but for the wind vane direction sensor, it will just spin and do nothing if the screw is loose.

I've rebuilt too many of these over the last few years, and that's the first thing that comes to mind when one fails.

You can check the anemometer for a dead sensor with a continuity checker, if the cups are spinning, you should get regular beeping from the checker.  For the wind vane, use an ohm meter on it's output, any resistance will show up, if it doesn't change, that's an good indicator for a loose screw.

Hope that helps some.

Take care and have fun!  Slainte Mah!

It's also a good indicator of a broken wire in the cable to the console if you are not using a wireless station. While not a VP2 station, I had an identical problem with the wind vane on a Davis Weather Monitor II. Wind speed displayed properly, wind vane turned, wind direction always registered North. It turned out to be a single broken wire within the cable between the anemometer/wind vane unit and the indoor console; probably due to corrosion or wind buffeting of the cable over time.

I had the exact problem. It turned out to be a short somewhere in the anemometer cable. I got a new anemometer shipped quickly and all has been well ever since.

When their test thing arrives follow their enclosed instructions to complete the test, which will isolate the problem. Knowing where the problem is will allow them to ship you the right part.

If they fail to enclose the instructions, just call them back and they will be eager to step you through the test. It's a VERY simple test, BTW.

Hi Edouard,Doc,Rick and Keith
Doc all the set screws are in place so thats ruled out
Rick it is wireless and its only 2 and 1/2 months old
Keith well when I first got it the wind vane was stuck worked it back and forth to get it working so the problem probably started then will just to wait on the test cable to see what going on

thanks for the feed back

cheers

You're probably right; that's probably when it happened. Those anemometers are very fragile creatures. Good luck!!

Totally agree... the anemometers are by far the most fragile piece of the sensor suite.  I'll trade you as my ISS board died.  At least you still have some of your sensors working.   :)

Glad you are getting it sorted out.

I feel your pain.  My station returned from Davis yesterday too and it was very painful to install in 15?F weather.

Dear Randall, Jay, and WeatherCat victims of the deep freeze,

;) What's the matta' with ya', going to let a little cold  [freeze] keep you from getting your stations back up?  [biggrin]

Seriously, I would love to trade you our 70.7˚F (21.5˚ C) sunny day for some . . . .

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

It's frustrating to have things not running for even a few minutes and you were down for a couple of weeks. Glad you are back up and running.
