Davis Wireless Temperature/Humidity Station
« on: February 10, 2015, 12:28:13 AM »
Ordered the wireless temperature/humidity station (Davis 6382). Got it a a great price via Provantage web site. Ground shipping from California wasn't bad either, but it was direct ship from Davis Instruments and they took more than a week just to get it on the truck. Then is was another week coming across to Georgia. (I had more time than money so I didn't pay for faster shipping.)

We've been talking about (in another thread) about extending the cable on the unit. Haven't gotten into that yet. Currently the station is mounted next to my VP2 ISS to verify if the two instruments record the temperature and humidity the same. After 24 hours of observations, the two sensors are consistently within + or - 1?F in temperature, and + or - 2% relative humidity; sufficient for my purposes. Discovered that the 6382 increments only 1? instead of the .1? sensitivity of the main ISS station. Not sure if it is the sensor or the Console that prevents the sensor from reading smaller increments. That limitation is disconcerting but it will still serve my purposes for the added sensor capability.

In a day or so, I plan to relocate the new sensor further from the house, down in the woods. At the new location, I suspect it won't be able to transmit the distance back to the console in the house. If that proves to be the case, one thought is to move the transmitter alone closer to the house using an extension cable back to the sensor unit. (Will be  talking to Davis support to verify if extending that cable is viable, per the other discussion thread.) That is the less expensive solution. The other solution is to setup a re-transmitter device that Davis Instruments sells. Will see. Meanwhile, fun to be expanding the capabilities of the personal weather station.

Anyone else out there have additional sensors on their station? The VP2 takes up to 8 extra devices.

Dear LesCimes and WeatherCat bargain hunters,

Ordered the wireless temperature/humidity station (Davis 6382). Got it a a great price via Provantage web site.

Provantage !?!?!  What is this bargain hunter site?

We've been talking about (in another thread) about extending the cable on the unit. Haven't gotten into that yet. Alas, it is the Davis architecture that limits the sensitivity of the extra temperature/humidity probes.

Anyone else out there have additional sensors on their station? The VP2 takes up to 8 extra devices.

I also have a second temperature/humidity probe basically as you have it but within range of console and weather envoy.  There are a number of folks on the forum with soil and leaf probes as well.   I don't recall anything else but I could wrong.

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Ciao,
Here is the Provantage website http://www.provantage.com. Because of Davis Instruments policy, resellers can only show list prices. You request a link to discounted prices on site to get the best price. The wireless  temperature/Humidity sensor I purchased is listed on Davis at $195. Bought it from Provantage at $125.

Finished setting it up;  pleased to report that its final location is still close enough to send a signal to the console without a repeater or extended transmitter. Whew. That is so much simpler. It is 300 ft from the home console, down a hill with a drop in elevation of around 30 ft and half the distance is thickly wooded with trees and bushes, not to mention that it is on the wrong side of my house from the weather room. The signal is still strong enough to reach the Console! Bravo Davis Instruments!

Added the extra sensor to monitor the micro-climate down in the low lying area near the house. I suspect it gets colder down there than up on the hilltop where the main station and anemometer are sited; and that it probably doesn't warm up as much during the day either. Humidity will probably be higher down there. Curiosity can be expensive. Oh well, it's just money.

I don't have any of the other extra sensors that Davis offers. Perhaps next year I'll be able to add on another.

I've got 2 remote temperature sensors added to the feed. One keeps an eye on the temperature downstairs in an unheated area where the water main comes through the wall. The other monitors the vent temperature in the central cooling unit.

I was disappointed in the 1? resolution as well. It doesn't make pretty charts like the ISS and console temperatures do.

Wow!  Provantage has Scaled Instruments beat by a large margin.  Oh well, I'll have to consider taking my business there.

Thanks for the tip!  [tup]

That site is even cheaper than Rainman Weather's member pricing (http://www.rainmanweather.com) where I usually buy my Davis stuff. OTOH, they don't beat Rainman Weather on everything...for example the high-end #6163 which Provantage lists at $30 higher (I didn't compare the total cost with shipping and tax, if any, included).

Maybe we should have a WeatherCat Wiki section under the Davis hardware area listing discounted Davis equipment resellers for ready reference.

I hadn't even heard of the sites you guys mention above. I've always shopped either Ambient Weather or Provantage. Guess I'll need to check some of the others too. Not a bad idea about listing Davis Instruments resellers in the Wiki. Would be handy to have a ready made list from which to begin the search for the best price on this expensive equipment.

Well, the temperature/humidity sensor I set up less than a year ago started giving me erroneous humidity readings. It is still under warranty so Davis replaced the sensor unit  free of charge. Changed it out today. Fortunately it was a bit cold. The wasps nesting in the baffle were too cold to sting me. Had I attempted the repair last week good chance I'd been stung. Replacement up and running with good readings. Meanwhile, it goes through a battery  every three to four months! No solar panel on it. I've enjoyed being able to compare temperature and humidity readings from two locations - a hill top in front of the house and the low area nearby in the woods. Temperature difference can be 6? F sometimes. Always cooler in the low area where cold air settles and the trees shade it pretty well from the sun.

Use a reminder for battery. (Re: Davis Wireless Temperature/Humidity Station)

Dear Michael and WeatherCat weather instrument caregivers,

Well, the temperature/humidity sensor I set up less than a year ago started giving me erroneous humidity readings.

that's definitely unfortunate.  We have enough Davis owners on this forum that we have an idea of how rugged Davis equipment has been in the past.  I sure hope that Davis isn't letting quality control slip in order to contain costs.

It is still under warranty so Davis replaced the sensor unit  free of charge. Changed it out today.

Glad you got a replacement and didn't get stung!

Meanwhile, it goes through a battery  every three to four months! No solar panel on it.

Yes, the 123 batteries have a very steady life expectancy in the temperature/humidity stations.  Since it is so steady, I just added a reminder to my iCal to replace that battery every 4 months in my station.  That way I don't get the surprise and can change it late in the day so it doesn't cause WeatherCat to generate too many low-battery warning emails.

Cheers, Edouard

Edouard, as they say, "Great minds think alike."  [cheers1] I added a reminder in my iCal as well. The battery replace is needed at a fairly predictable rate.
