I bought a M1 that is running Monterey and my emails now longer work. When I hit the "Test" button I get a spinner above it and nothing else happens. I don't see anything in the log file. The settings have been triple checked with the old system that is still running but on High Sierra. Anyone have any ideas?

Dear mikey1299 and WeatherCat troubleshooters,

Which email service are you trying to connect to? It could be the case that the operating system upgrade changed the way you need to connect.
Let us know, . . . . .

It is gmail. It still will not send a test email but the daily emails still got sent at midnight.

Dear mikey1299 and WeatherCat troubleshooters,
It is gmail. It still will not send a test email but the daily emails still got sent at midnight.
If email works part of the time, most likely this is some sort of file corruption. Can you restore your WeatherCat preferences from a copy that is well before you upgraded? Instructions on replacing preference files can be found here on the WeatherCat Wiki:
https://wiki.trixology.com/index.php?title=How_to_create_and_use_a_backup_of_your_WeatherCat_preferences_file (https://wiki.trixology.com/index.php?title=How_to_create_and_use_a_backup_of_your_WeatherCat_preferences_file)
If you haven't created a backup copy, you might be able to restore from something like a Time Machine backup.
Cheers, Edouard

I'm having the same issue .... M1 Mac, OS Monterey, Cox internet ...
I hit the test button and get this message "WeatherCat was unable to send a test email ...". in the past I received custom alert emails but we rarely have weather in Phoenix so my custom alerts rarely trigger .... I'm not sure when this became an issue.
I deleted the plist file as suggested and restarted the computer, confirmed the settings and still can't send a test email. I tried SMPT ports 25, 993 and 465.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated! We're starting our monsoon season and I'm hoping I'll get a rain starting email from WC!

Perhaps port 587 for SMTP? Cox Email Server Settings (https://www.cox.com/residential/support/cox-email-server-settings.html)
BitRecoverâ„¢ (https://www.bitrecover.com/imap-settings/cox-mail/)
Does Cox have any new email criteria/password restrictions?
I assume you are NOT having problems with your email app and your Cox accounts, correct? [computer]
-
Port 587 didn't work and my Cox.net email is working as expected. the 'can't send' message appears a second after I hit the end email button so I'm guessing there is something local that is responsible for the problem.
thanks for the quick reply!
-
Dear drewaz, X-Air, and WeatherCat troubleshooters,
Thanks X-Air for locating the Cox email server instructions. According to those instructions and the WeatherCat manual (see page 126,) you should use port 465 and have the authentication checkbox checked in the WeatherCat preferences. If the Cox documentation is still correct that should work.
The other thing to check is whether or not Cox has made changes to their security measures. The Cox documentation indicates that this email service is deprecated and no longer available to new users. Perhaps some new security measure has been implemented that your email client has adjusted for automatically, but WeatherCat requires an explicit change such as an application specific password.
Let us know what you discover,
Edouard
-
THANKS as always elagache. you are a savior around here!
as I mentioned in my post, I did try port 465 and the authentication box is checked. the email I am using is my primary Cox email, I have used it for many years and it works outside of WC despite the fact that Cox no longer offers email accounts. Luckily (for me) they have allowed customers to keep their legacy email accounts. The password provided is the correct one for this email account.
the 'failed' message occurs immediately after hitting the test button ... I don't think there would even be time to attempt to connect with the Cox server. I'm not great at IT issues but it seems to me there is something misbehaving between WC and Monterey (and possibly an M1 Mac) but who knows.
maybe others using Monterey and WC will reply and let me know if all is well on their end.
thank you again for always being around. you never seem to miss a beat!!!!! I'll try anything you suggest.

Dear drewaz and WeatherCat troubleshooters,
THANKS as always elagache. you are a savior around here!
You are welcome for past assistance. However, I'm not sure what is going on in this case.
as I mentioned in my post, I did try port 465 and the authentication box is checked.
That is definitely a disturbing result since that contradicts the Cox documentation.

Luckily (for me) they have allowed customers to keep their legacy email accounts. The password provided is the correct one for this email account.
So how to you retrieve your general emails from this account? Do you use an email client or a web interface?

Unfortunately, it is really impossible to tell from that observation alone. I assume your ISP is also Cox, so the mail server could be rapidly accessible on their own network. However, there could be other issues like some sort of firewall restriction that is preventing connections on port 465.
Do you have any idea when this problem started? Could it date back all the way to your upgrade to the M1 Mac?
The only other thought that comes to mind is how did you replace the WeatherCat preference file? Is there any chance you replaced it with what was unfortunately another corrupted preference file? If you have a Time Machine backup, could you replace the file with a very old preference file? I'm wondering if you could restore the preference file from before you upgraded your Mac.
Sorry, I don't see any obvious cause to this mystery. Anyone else has something to suggest? (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/anyone_sign.gif)

My Cox emails are retrieved by Apple Mail and have been for a very long time. I've never had an issue with this set up. The outgoing port listed in Apple Mail is 587.
I suspect the issue here occurred well before switching to an M1 Mac and Monterey (Big Sur before Monterey). I'm in Phoenix and don't expect to get any WC alert emails because the weather never seems to change. We recently had RAIN though and I noticed I didn't get an alert email so I started looking around and found the current problem. I don't have a back up that goes back that far though.
I followed the (?) Wiki instructions and closed WC, deleted the WC preference file, emptied the trash, restarted the computer and set up WC again using the new preference file so I guess I can assume the new one isn't corrupt? I tried numerous ports (25, 993, 465, 587) but the result was the same. I check the box to get daily data emails but ... no luck with that either.
Everything else WC seems to be working ... I'll do my best to live without emails lol.
thanks again Edouard!
-
Probably not the case here, but I'll mention it just the same. Uploading to Weather Underground had similar issues, and it turned out that they stopped accepting characters in the user's password. If your password contains something weird, temporarily change it and see if that resolves the issue.
Probably not, but worth a shot.
-
thanks Steve .... def worth a shot but sadly it didn't work
thanks though
-
I think what Steve meant was "special" characters. Not sure the exact "special characters" was ever published here. Safest bet (for WU, anyway) would be anything other than the 26 letters of the English alphabet and the numbers zero through nine. On the other hand, I wouldn't think that a major Internet provider would accept only such a limited range of characters, especially for password where 'more is always better'!
Easiest 'fix' might be to use a completely different email address from a different service. I assume you have at least an Apple supplied (iCloud/.mac/...) addy.
It would be great if another WC user who also uses Cox would chime in with some details/info.

Thanks xairbusdriver .... so I switched to my never previously used icloud email address, what I think is the correct smtp (smtp.mail.me.com) and port 587 and it still is a no go. UGH. I thought for sure this would solve my problem.
I sent myself an email from Cox to the icloud address and it was delivered ..... I know it's a good email.
anyway, my favorite plane is the airbus 350!
Thanks for your continued thoughts ... much appreciated.

Two very basic things you can check/verify:
First, always quit any app while looking at its .plist file! We're not going to edit/change the file! Look but don't touch! [lol] ThU32:-)
1. Find the "com.trixology.weathercat.plist". Use Get Info (command+I) and see if it is recording the last time you modified your prefs.
Path: your Mac/Users/yourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.trixology.weathercat.plist
2. With TextWrangler/BBEdit (https://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/) (or another text editor), open that com.trixology.weathercat.plist file and search for SMTP. There should be the following text:<key>emailSMTPPort</key>
<integer>587</integer>
<key>SMTPServer</key>
<string>smtp.YOURsmtpSERVERname</string>
NOTE: The <string> and the <integer> values should be whatever you have inserted in the WC Prefs/Email-SMTP Server text boxes.

I'm back in town and followed the above instructions.
The date of most recent preference change and the SMTP setting are both in the plist file and mirror my WC preference.

Dear drewaz and WeatherCat troubleshooters,
Sorry, I'm definitely running out of ideas on this problem. It is a long shot, but perhaps replace the WeatherCat application file itself. Obviously quit WeatherCat first, download a copy of WeatherCat from Trixology.com:
https://trixology.com/weathercat/ (https://trixology.com/weathercat/)
Replace the WeatherCat application file in the Application folder and start WeatherCat up again.
Let us know what you discover.
Edouard
-
Might as well delete the current app and restart before launching the new copy, just to clear any OS register, too.
Good luck!
-
I'm willing to try but ..... if I install a new copy will I loose all of my archived/saved weather data? I guess I could find it in a back up but that I'd rather not lol
thanks
-
You won't lose any WC data by deleting and reinstalling the app.
There is a new issue with gmail servers no longer allowing third-party apps like WeatherCat to send admin emails using a gmail account. For gmail accounts, the issue is solved simply by turning on 2FA and tweaking the gmail settings. You can read more about the gmail issue here ==> https://athena.trixology.com/index.php?topic=3427.0
I mention this because it is possible Cox has implemented some similar security measure that won't let a third party app access your legacy email account as it has in the past. This is more likely than the M1 chip or WC being the culprit. I think it's worth a call to Cox tech support to ask if they still allow third-party apps to access your account with a simple username and password.
-
so ..... I deleted WC (with TrashMe) and installed a fresh copy of WC, entered the info in Preferences, restarted the computer, crossed my fingers and hit the TEST button but the test email failed as it did before.
I called Cox a couple of days ago and they weren't of much help so I changed the email to my iCloud email and this is what didn't work today. I guess I will try with the Cox email again later this evening.
Thanks everyone for helping me! Every time I've had an issue you have responded with thoughtful advice ... what a wonderful group you are!!!! Much much appreciated.

Dear drewaz, Blick and WeatherCat troubleshooters,
I called Cox a couple of days ago and they weren't of much help so I changed the email to my iCloud email and this is what didn't work today.
Did you create an application specific password when you made the change? Apple is now requiring this just like Google has done. Without it, indeed WeatherCat won't be able to connect.
Let us know.

No worries. I don't know if Cox might be changing their requirements (they might.) However, Apple has required an application specific password for a long time. Here is Stu's posting from 2016 advising us about it:
https://athena.trixology.com/index.php?topic=2356.msg22954#msg22954 (https://athena.trixology.com/index.php?topic=2356.msg22954#msg22954)
He directs us to this Apple Technical Support document:

If you follow those instructions, you should be able to create password that will allow WeatherCat to use your iCloud email address.

I created an icloud app specific password but it didn't work ... still getting the message that the test email failed.
once again, your help is much appreciated.

Dear drewaz and WeatherCat troubleshooters,
I created an icloud app specific password but it didn't work ... still getting the message that the test email failed.
once again, your help is much appreciated.
Sorry that you are still struggling with this. How do you retrieve your email? Do you use a web interface or do you an email client like Apple Mail? GoDaddy has forced me to struggle with a similar set of issues, and it was much easier for me to run tests using my email client than using WeatherCat. Try using exactly the same settings in something like Apple Mail and see if it gives some sort of error message that could help us figure out what is going on.
Edouard
P.S. Sorry I didn't think about this sooner, but what do you see in the WeatherCat log when the email fails. Perhaps there is a clue right there.
-
so .... I use Apple Mail to retrieve emails from Cox. I set the mail preference in WC to mirror the setup in Apple Mail including the port and did a test and once again got this message: "WeatherCat was unable to send a test email to xxxxxxx@cox.net. You suggested this: "Try using exactly the same settings in something like Apple Mail and see if it gives some sort of error message that could help us figure out what is going on: is that what you wanted me to do? I'm a touch out of my league here I think lol.
these are from the WC log:
11:21:01 AM 07-Jul-2022: ***Custom Alert 'Int. temp > 85 Alert' Triggered***
11:21:01 AM 07-Jul-2022: ***Custom Alert 'Int. temp > 85 Alert'*** Sending alert email...
11:21:01 AM 07-Jul-2022: ***Email: Couldn't send Custom Alert 'Int. temp > 85 Alert' xxxxxxxx@cox.net***. Mail failure
11:33:11 AM 07-Jul-2022: Email: Test failed. Couldn't send error.
a BIG thanks for your interest and help!

Dear drewaz and WeatherCat troubleshooters,
I apologize but I'm really unable to imagine what is causing your problems.
so .... I use Apple Mail to retrieve emails from Cox. I set the mail preference in WC to mirror the setup in Apple Mail including the port and did a test and once again got this message: "WeatherCat was unable to send a test email to xxxxxxx@cox.net.
I assume that Apple Mail has absolutely no problem sending messages - only WeatherCat. Could you perhaps give us screenshots of the Apple Mail settings that you are using for Cox? It is a long shot, but just in case.
You suggested this: "Try using exactly the same settings in something like Apple Mail and see if it gives some sort of error message that could help us figure out what is going on: is that what you wanted me to do?
Actually, I was wondering about using iCloud with WeatherCat. Since you had created an application specific password so that WeatherCat could use iCloud, I was wondering what would happen if you provided those settings in a test account using Apple Mail. I'm still trying to differentiate if the problem is internal to WeatherCat or somehow network related.
these are from the WC log:
11:21:01 AM 07-Jul-2022: ***Custom Alert 'Int. temp > 85 Alert' Triggered***

Oh well, I was hoping that perhaps there would be a more specific error message.
Please keep us updated and we'll keep trying to help!

Dear drewaz and WeatherCat troubleshooters,
I'm definitely running out of ideas on this one. Did this problem start immediately after you purchased a new M1 Mac?
I'm all the way back at macOS Mojave, so Monterey is unknown to me. However, macOS does have a built-in firewall now. I'm wondering if somehow the default settings for Monterey are interfering with WeatherCat. There is this Apple Support article on the Monterey Firewall feature:
https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/change-firewall-preferences-on-mac-mh11783/mac (https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/change-firewall-preferences-on-mac-mh11783/mac)
You might look through it to see if says anything about blocking SMTP. It might be the case that Apple blocks this for anything besides Apple Mail to prevent your computer from being hijacked and used as an illicit spamming device.
Unfortunately I can't help you with this directly. However, anyone else running macOS Monterey is definitely encouraged to do some research to see if they can help out.
By all means let us know.
Edouard
-
First, I'm still using Big Sur (11.6.7), I have no experience with Monterey...
1. What happens if your check/allow "Automatically manage connection settings"?
2. What happens if you disable "Use TLS/SSL"?
3. What are your choices in the TLS Certificate: drop-down menu?
Not sure why (EDIT: See note* at end of this post), but the only other difference (other than being Comcast vs Cox, of course) is the text in my "Account:" is "Comcast".
4. What are the other choices in your drop-down menu?
*NOTE: In the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) section, the last option in the "Account:" drop-down menu is "Edit SMTP Server List..." I assume they match what you have in those duplicate fields in that Edit form.

I'm actually not sure when the problem started .... we rarely have weather here except excessive heat so I didn't really expect any notifications for my custom alerts .... until a few weeks ago lol.
I turned off the firewall and that didn't correct the problem. FWIW WC was in the 'allowed' apps already.
Anyway, your assistance is greatly appreciated. It's not a major issue and I'll be able to live with it.
Have a great weekend.

I had the exact same problem. Still do. I have two weather stations one at a second home and one at my home. We saw the 2nd home but I still host the weather station for the owners. So I don't go out there and access it remotely via TeamViewer. I use the same settings e email setup on both computers. The computer at the second home is Catalina -No problem at all using Apple settings
On my Monterey 12.6 based M! system system at my house I used the same settings and WeatherCat and recently it kept crashing -didn't realize why until I was told by support it was unsuccessfully trying to send emails, Prior to Monterey 12.6 I didn't have a crash and did not notice an email issue.
Settings that work on my second home are:
Server: smtp.me.com
User:xxx@me.com
Password: My Apple PW
Authentication: Checked
Port 587
The only difference is the operating system on the two computers:
2nd Home Catalina 10.15.7 -I only use the computer for WeatherCat - EMAIL STILL WORKS
My Home 24"M1 Monterey 12.6 - Spinning wheel for email w/ same settings as 2nd home.
Whenever I've had to reset the email for a variety of reasons it's always seems like I'm starting over from beginning trying to find the right settings. I gave up on Gmail and just used my Apple account.
I have to say the only frustrating thing about WeatherCat has been setting up the email over the years. That's just my personal experience. Otherwise, it's pretty rock-solid IMHO.
If others are using a different setting for Apple mail I'd be interested in what works for you. I've given up at home and just left it blank.
TIA
Bob
-
I haven't been able to resolve my email issue either. I'm hoping Ventura will be the answer but I'm not holding my breath lol.
-
Dear Bob, drewaz, and WeatherCat troubleshooters,
Unfortunately, there is sometime mysterious going on with email services in recent months. I suspect there is a behind-the-scenes security issue that is causing changes to the way email is handled and that is what is causing the problem for WeatherCat. I ran into some problems of my own this past year which were not easy to resolve.
I had the exact same problem. Still do.
. . . .
Settings that work on my second home are:
Server: smtp.me.com
User:xxx@me.com
Password: My Apple PW
Authentication: Checked
Port 587
. . . . .
You might have done this, but just as a precaution. When you say "My Apple PW" do you mean your Apple ID password or an application specific password for WeatherCat.
As noted earlier in this thread, Apple has required an application specific password for a long time. Here is Stu's posting from 2016 advising us about it:
https://athena.trixology.com/index.php?topic=2356.msg22954#msg22954 (https://athena.trixology.com/index.php?topic=2356.msg22954#msg22954)
He directs us to this Apple Technical Support document:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204397 (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204397)
You might need two distinct application specific passwords for the WeatherCat installations at the two different houses.
Let us know if that gets you unstuck.

to be honest, emailing an alert is pretty much obsolete .... why not tweak WC to send text message alerts? that seems to be the current standard for most programs I deal with.
-
Edouard, in the WC email set up you use the Apple ID User password NOT the WC password. That would be the same for either computer that I have setup - yet one works and the other spins with the same settings. On my home computer it worked for a long time and then it just stopped working and that's when my app would crash and Trixology support said it was trying to send out an email that couldn't go out. That's when I noticed the spinning wheel. The only reason I didn't see it is that I'm not sending an alert sound from my house since I'm there and I know what the weather is.

I'll ask again ..... can WC be updated to send alerts as text messages?

Of course, if and when the developer has the time to make the changes. He has a list of known concerns and suggested changes and tries to address them in a timely manner. He also has a full-time job and family. ThU5:-)
However, placing a request in the 14 pages of posts will probably be the fastest and most direct way to add your desired function. I doubt he has time to read every post in every thread every day. So there is a whole section/forum just for "requests": WeatherCat Feature Requests (https://athena.trixology.com/index.php?board=4.0) ThU32:-)
Personally, I have little need for a text or email alert. I have access to my own website (which is not "programming", even grade schoolers can do it ;D) that WC updates every 5 minutes and the only time I'm not in front of a browser is when I sleep. Even then, the Mac mini is running 24/7/365 and will display any problems when I awake. Fortunately, I'm retired now and find 'immediacy' is applied to fewer things than in the past! [lol]

Enjoy retirement! I did add my wish to the Features Request yesterday. Fingers crossed!

Edouard, the application specific password jogged my 73-year old memory I recalled that I had set one up. So I am embarrassed. I set up another one today (and wrote it down this time) and tried using it with the same settings as my other working system at a 2nd home (below) and all I still get is a spinning wheel with Apple mail. I've pretty much decided to forgo email and just live without it as the computer is at my home. As I said this is the only really irritating issue I've had with WeatherCat in that one would assume it is easy to trouble shoot email setup.. So, it's not really a big deal even though it has occupied a good deal of my retired life recently to my wife's irritation. If this is the worst problem I have I can live with it. I'll get back to it later I am sure.
Settings workING at my second home are:
Server: smtp.me.com
User:xxx@me.com
Password: My Apple Email PW - iTunes PW
Authentication: Checked
Port 587
