downloading historical data
« on: March 12, 2013, 11:06:25 AM »
Hi.

A basic query I imagine. When I open WC it informs its downloading "x" amount of files which it does rapidly, but alongside in brackets each time there is this (512 files to download). Have I done something wrong in set-up?

Hi Gwyfyn1
No what it is doing it is downloading the data that was stored in you data logger
Most of us keep our computer running 24/7 just putting the screen to sleep so it keeps up with the current data
if you are shutting down or letting your computers hard drive go to sleep this will happen every time you restart it up or wake up the hard drive
Hopes this helps

cheers

Hi - I'm new here and am just trying out WeatherCat (trial version). I have a Davis VP2 with USB datalogger that I had linked to a PC running the Davis software. A couple of years ago I moved, the PC died and so on. I set my VP2 up almost as soon as I moved but never got around to linking it to a computer. The datalogger will be full of data from the new location by now so I'm not worried about resetting it.
So now I have installed the trial version of weathercat on my iMac (we no longer have a PC) and plugged in the VP2 - voila data is flowing.

BUT - is there a way of ensuring WeatherCat brings in the data stored in the datalogger in the VP2? It only seems to be logging data in real time? Or is there a way to tell?
It may be an obvious question but I just can't see - I've done a search here but mostly get Q's regarding importing data from wunderground and so on. I don't want to import my old Weatherlink data because it was from a different location (unless I could easily then I could say it's wetter and cooler here than....). Thanks in advance. James.

PS - on edit. I remember some USB/UART voodo with the datalogger years ago locking the PC

Hi James.

A simple way to see any data would be in the Weathercat toolbar menu/tools scroll down to Daily Viewer/Editor, all records received by Weather Cat can be viewed there, just be selecting the appropriate day.

I don't think the 'Cat generates daily or monthly reports for 'old' data imported into the data base yet, it's something Stu has on his list but when reports  are produced they will be held in your/Documents/WeatherCatReports folder.

Hope this helps.

Ooopps ! Welcome to the  [cat][tup]

I've tried the Data Viewer/Editor and there's no data apart from today. I also looked at the log but can't see anything useful - though I don't know what I'm looking for!

Update. I closed weathercat for a couple of hours and on reopening it imported the 512 records in the datalogger buffer. They still don't show in WeatherCat but I'm guessing they will in time, let's see.

Hi James, and welcome to the WeatherCat forum!

I'm not positive, but I think when you do a new station setup, WeatherCat purges the contents of the data logger. the 512 data points you are downloading are from when you first set up WeatherCat (assuming the hardware options are still set at every five minutes.) I'm sure Stu (the developer) will let you know when he gets on here again, as he is very responsive to questions.

Welcome aboard,
Steve

WeatherCat won't use any data from the logger prior to it's first run. After that it'll download missing data from the logger as required. By default WeatherCat won't clear the logger after a download but the option to do this is available via Tools->Station Hardware Options.

On a Vantage we always download all the records in the logger due to a bug in some versions of the firmware that can mess up downloading just the records we need.

Thanks for letting me know. I'd have preferred to have the additional data - but then I could have got into gear and done this two years ago if it were that important.......
Now to get playing with some of the additional features before my trial runs out.
Thanks again. James

I have to come back on this again. Every time I download data when I open up WC, it states the number of files/records to download, but also in brackets there is still this constant - 512 files to download. This seems to be similar to what Jamesmb is saying.

Also one other point, I run Windows on my Mac through Parallels, as I have two softwares for my bird ringing and moth recording that are not compatible with a Mac. Now if I go into these to work and WC is running, when I get put of Windows, WC seems to download continuously. It does not seem to affect any data, but in order for WC to run correctly again I have to stop it and restart. So, if anyone does run Windows via Parallels on their Mac be aware of this.

I could be wrong, but I don't think that WCat wants to "Share" the USB port that your weather station is hooked up to with Parallels...  In Parallels, disable the USB Sharing (and restart) and see if your problem goes away.  Should be an easy enough test to try.
