Vantage Pro2 to WxCat 3.12 just stopped XFRing data
« on: April 21, 2021, 08:42:50 PM »
I have a Vantage Pro 2 I am running Big Sur updated the latest Big Sur UART that is compatible with Big Sur and 3.12 WeatherCat. Everything has been working great until yesterday. I've had this set up for close to 10 years with historical data going back that far. Yesterday when it all went downhill. I verified my Vantage Pro  2 display is receiving data from my weather station but for some reason no data is being forwarded to my iMac at all. I've have had done no  recent updates to Big Sur (I even reinstalled the UART to be sure that is not the issue)  and it was working faithfully for years. Now I'm showing no data and when when I start up WeatherCat it does not log any data or b/u data in startup. When I checked the FTP upload it's uploading data but if I look at PWS or CWOP within Weathercat nothing is being sent. I've checked the cable between the Vantage Pro and the Mac and it has no issues. The Vantage pro is receiving data directly – just nothing is going into the Mac.  Everything seems to be working as it should be. I'm befuddled. Any thoughts?

Given the symptoms, your problems have something to do with the data logger.  The first thing to check is that the data logger is firmly seated into the console.  It is unusual, but sometimes temperature fluctuation causes the data logger to work its way free from the console.  Power everything down before attempting this and be careful to avoid having static electricity on your hands.

If that doesn't work, it is probably time to check with Davis Technical support.  It is best to call them and be prepared to be on hold for quite a while.  The technical support number is:

(510) 732-7814

Let us know what you uncover.

Cheers, Edouard

One other possibility is that your data logger needs to be reseated and its cache cleared. If you check under WeatherCat | Tools | Log and see you have lots of Comms Errors, you need to reseat (or reset) your logger. There is a Wiki article about resetting the IP data logger and it will guide you in resetting your logger even though it's not an IP logger. Just skip the steps that refer to ethernet cables.

Thank much for the quick reply - no joy, still not working. Went through the set up several times - no data being transferred and I will call Davis. Assume it may indeed be the logger and if it is it ;s pretty expensive.  I have purchased two Davis Vantage Pros - one for our home and a 2nd home we sold - with the 2nd Davis included in the sale.  I never been really happy with the Vantage Pro finickiness. This one is about 12 years old and the plastic parts have aged and  are brittle for being in the elements for so long. Any suggestions for another system to look at if I just decide to replace this one. All the reviews say Davis is the best systems. Thanks again.  If I find anything new I'll let you know.

Dear Bob, Blick, and WeatherCat station caregivers,

. . . .
I have purchased two Davis Vantage Pros - one for our home and a 2nd home we sold - with the 2nd Davis included in the sale.  I never been really happy with the Vantage Pro finickiness.

Sorry to hear that you have had problems with Davis equipment.  Most of us have had trouble free service from Davis equipment until something breaks.

This one is about 12 years old and the plastic parts have aged and  are brittle for being in the elements for so long.

12 years is actually a fairly decent lifespan for weather instruments.  My station is only 11 years old and I have had to replace the anemometer and temperature/humidity probe.  Obviously, it depends on the conditions, but here in California the heat and strong sunshine appears to really damage even UV protected plastic.

Any suggestions for another system to look at if I just decide to replace this one. All the reviews say Davis is the best systems. Thanks again.  If I find anything new I'll let you know.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any system that is supported by WeatherCat that is tougher or more durable.  The list of WeatherCat supported stations can be found on this page:

https://trixology.com/weathercat/

Most of the stations besides Davis are less expensive and therefore less likely to last.  The one exception you might want to look into is Columbia Weather Systems:

https://columbiaweather.com/products/weather-stations/fixed-base/

WeatherCat will work with these stations if you provide a weather micro server:

https://columbiaweather.com/products/weather-monitoring/microserver/

I don't know of anyone on the WeatherCat forum using this station but they are clearly of an advanced design.

I hope this is some help.

Cheers, Edouard

Thank you, Edouard. I moved the station to my wife's computer and it doesn't work there so it's either the Weather Link cable or the console/receiver. Found a fairly inexpensive logger on eBay and I'll give that a shot. But, I'll also give Davis a call when I have to the time to wait on hold. As for a new Weather Station I think you're right the Davis being the best model for what the average homeowners needs. Both the ones I've owned have lasted a very long time considering the elements they operate in. If I get it up and running I'll post what solved the problem. Thanks again!
