FTP Errors
« on: April 19, 2016, 12:05:59 AM »
All of a sudden, I am experiencing FTP errors every 10 minutes. Here are the log entries:

Code: [Select]
4/18/16 4:52:50.107 PM WeatherCat[436]: FTP: FTP ERROR (67) - Login error - check user name and password.
4/18/16 4:52:50.112 PM WeatherCat[436]: FTP: FTP ERROR 910: Failed to complete upload (null) - retrying in 1 second.

I haven't changed the user name or password for almost 4 years. In WC preferences I checked the FTP Details. They looked fine. When I clicked on the Test button it told me the directory must end in a "/". The directory did not end in slash, so I added one. The next test was successful.

This did not solve the problem. Does anyone else have suggestions for what I should check?

Looks to me like the Aux FTP uploads are all going through, but the main upload every 10 minutes is generating the errors. Since WC only has one FTP destination option with one set of login connections, how is this possible?

I should have posted this in General, not integration. Sorry, one of the Mods can move it.

Has this problem corrected itself? I'm assuming your web hosting company may have been having problems or doing maintenance work. If the AUX uploads are working, it would seem your username/password/ftp address are all correct. Still, it's strange for one to work and not the other.

Do you have a stand-alone FTP client app? If so, you could try uploading something with it. If knot, there are several around and most offer a limited time free use.

Thanks for the move, Steve.

Still happening. Appears to be when WC is uploading image.jpg. It uploads everything in between but fails with a login error on the image. But not every time. Sometimes it successfully uploads the image.jpg for an hour, then fails again. I can successfully FTP standalone with FileZilla so I know the login credentials are correct.

This continue to be weird.

I have rebooted the iMac butt hat made no difference.

Here is a sample from the log:
Code: [Select]
4/18/16 8:42:49.444 PM WeatherCat[436]: Aux. FTP: Uploading realtimegaugesWC.txt.
4/18/16 8:42:51.903 PM WeatherCat[436]: Aux. FTP: Finished. Uploaded 163900 bytes in 29 seconds at 5550 bytes per second.
4/18/16 8:42:57.620 PM WeatherCat[436]: FTP: Uploading image.jpg.
4/18/16 8:43:02.475 PM WeatherCat[436]: FTP: curl: (67) Access denied: 530
4/18/16 8:43:02.493 PM WeatherCat[436]: FTP: FTP ERROR (67) - Login error - check user name and password.
4/18/16 8:43:02.512 PM WeatherCat[436]: FTP: FTP ERROR 910: Failed to complete upload (null) - retrying in 1 second.
4/18/16 8:43:03.480 PM WeatherCat[436]: FTP: Uploading image.jpg.
4/18/16 8:43:09.842 PM WeatherCat[436]: FTP: curl: (67) Access denied: 530
4/18/16 8:43:09.859 PM WeatherCat[436]: FTP: FTP ERROR (67) - Login error - check user name and password.
4/18/16 8:43:09.879 PM WeatherCat[436]: FTP: FTP ERROR 910: Failed to complete upload (null) - retrying in 1 second.
4/18/16 8:43:10.845 PM WeatherCat[436]: FTP: Uploading image.jpg.
4/18/16 8:43:16.331 PM WeatherCat[436]: FTP: curl: (67) Access denied: 530
4/18/16 8:43:16.349 PM WeatherCat[436]: FTP: FTP ERROR (67) - Login error - check user name and password.
4/18/16 8:43:16.369 PM WeatherCat[436]: FTP: FTP ERROR 911: Could not upload (null) - Aborting upload.
4/18/16 8:43:17.342 PM WeatherCat[436]: FTP: Finished. Uploaded 1006849 bytes in 58 seconds at 17123 bytes per second.

It is lines of errors followed by the last line that shows the FTP was successful. This is followed by 10 minutes of successful AUX FTP and then these errors are repeated, followed by a successful upload.

This pattern repeated for an hour, then all FTP was successful for 50 minutes, then the 10 minute failure messages returned for an hour, then all was good for 45 minutes, then one set of failure messages and now it has run fine for 4 hours.

Any thoughts?

Ran fine for 9 hours overnight. 10-minute error pattern for an hour this morning but has run error free for the last 30 minutes.

I'd be willing to bet this is an issue WU is already aware of but it might be worth sending them a note with your log. The two or three times I've e-mail the support staff, I've always heard back although it has taken a couple days.

Just out of curiosity, I wonder what would happen if you manually FTP'd your webcam image to webcam.wunderground.com the next time you see the problem.

Edited for typo.

Blick,

Just to clarify: this is the upload to your website, correct? You might check to see if you have hotlink protection for image files turned on. Just to be sure, turn it off then back up to update your .htaccess file. It may be corrupted. That's about my only thought for now, so good luck.

Sure it isn't Weather Underground? (Re: FTP Errors)
« Reply #7 on: April 19, 2016, 10:59:41 PM »
Dear Blick, X-Air, Felix, Alan, and WeatherCat troubleshooters,

All of a sudden, I am experiencing FTP errors every 10 minutes. Here are the log entries:

Are you certain this isn't the Weather Underground webcam upload?  I've been having random episodes of FTP upload errors at 10 minutes intervals.  The only thing I upload at 10 minute intervals is the webcam image to Weather Underground.

Anyone else noticing this?

Cheers, Edouard

This was happening to me a while back it took WU 3 days to respond they said they were having server problems which only effects certain areas so the server that you re on might have been the problem

Although WU shows the last webcam was uploaded just a few minutes ago (6:32 CDT), I do hove the same FTP errors (67, 910, and 911) just 10 minutes earlier.

Looks like Felix, Alan, Edouard, and Randal are correct. It's not WC or your ISP that are failing, it's WU. WU's servers may just be over-load at various times.

At least WU is now showing a mini-webcam image of my station on their map. ;)

BTW, I assume you are getting an email alert from WC about these errors? Or do you just not have anything more exciting to read than Console logs! :o [lol]

Thanks Felix, I had not thought to email them. I have now done that.

At first, that is what I assumed, but the webcam image on my website is updating just fine.

Edouard (and all of you), just out of curiosity, what do you have your Main FTP time set to in WeatherCat | Preferences | On-Line | Update Web Pages Every?

Good to know. Thanks.

Now that I know that some of the rest of you are seeing these same errors, I am feeling better. I had just changed the provisioning of my Internet speed with my ISP and those errors started up the next day, so I assumed the problem was on my end. It looks now like this appears to be a WU thing. Sometimes when I pull up my WU site, it shows my webcam is unavailable and a few minutes later, it shows up fine.

I have not received any email from WU; I'm just memorizing all the arcane stuff as I watch the console log scroll by.

I'll keep my eye on this for a few days and see what happens.

Everyone: Thanks so much for responding. WeatherCatters are the best!

I received an immediate, although not particularly helpful, response from WU:

Hello,

I'm not seeing the problem in general, so it's likely something specific to the cam's setup. I have heard of that happening if the upload options aren't set to disconnect after an upload?the logins build up, and eventually will be refused due to "too many connections".

Obviously he assumes your camera is directly ft ping to WU.  [rolleyes2] His comment would probably make sense if we weren't using WC.

WE 'think' too much alike! I always assume the problem is on my end first. OTOH, it usually  is! [blush] [banghead]

Uploads on the slow-side (Re: FTP Errors)

Dear Randall, Blick, X-Air, and WeatherCat troubleshooters,

Edouard (and all of you), just out of curiosity, what do you have your Main FTP time set to in WeatherCat | Preferences | On-Line | Update Web Pages Every?

Since my website is the old fashioned kind, I try to compromise between a lot of data uploads and having stale data.  I update every 15 minutes.

My updating is a bit faster:
  • Journal: 720 minutes (maximum allowed may be 999 minutes?)
  • Movies & Snapshot image: 10 minutes, but WC holds the movies until just after each hour, anyway (I need to confirm that * )
  • WC & Computer Uptime: 5 minutes
  • Main html pages: 2 minutes

* Found an old thread I'd created to solve problems I'd created and found a comment from Stu that confirms this schedule. I think you can see/confirm it in Cosole logs where you'll find a DailyMovieController entry just after each new hour. [tup]
