Dear WeatherCat fans of that other "cat!"

When Stu released version 2.3.0 of WeatherCat, I just copied the entire folder into my Application folder as I have done for years.  Today I was checking on the location of WeatherCatClient and oops, Sylvester wasn't being automatically launched anymore because it had remained in the Companion Applications folder.  So just a reminder when you install a completely new version of WeatherCat to move Sylvester into the WeatherCat folder so that it gets automatically launched like before!

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

A companion app that integrates with your Twitter account to post weather data from WeatherCat. See the manual, page 120.

Had some folks wanting me to put some weather data on Twit. I'd seen something called "Sylvester" around here but never investigated it since I try hard not to be a "Twit". I had registered at Twitter some six years ago, have no idea what email address I used, so they couldn't reset my password. Finally re-registered.

BTW, in the Manual I speak of, the description of the app is on pages 118 & 119. Page 120 says "Page Intentionally Blank". :) [deleted text].

What's the magic hand-shake to have Twitter post some weather data?

THIS JUST IN!
Some idiot was starting WC using the icon on the Dock! [banghead] That was the alias for the older (2.2.2) version! I've now removed that icon, started the newer WC and glued it onto the Dock. We'll see how things look in the morning... after the "idiot" has some sleep! [blush] [sleep] [deleted brain]

Hmmm? If you should happen to visit that eejit again, tell him or her that IF the program update has the same name and sits in the same folder, the Dock icon don't care what version it is. And, ask them why they are keeping the old version anyway. It's like going out and buying a new truck, but leaving the old truck under the oak tree for a lawn decoration.

The two key words in that rule are "same name". I don't think there is any OS in use that will allow two items of any category to have the same name in the same directory. A good file manager app will ask the user to select one or the other before allowing the new item with the same name into that directory. A better file manager app will also offer an option to automatically rename the original item and then allow the new one. ;)

In another thread, I reported my having had my 2.2.2 copy of WC labeled with that version number as a suffix. That's what the Dock icon was related to. And that's what it activated; exactly the app it was associated with. There was not, as yet, any icon for the newer version of WC to select/use/click/etc. That's simply another reason I don't use the Dock any more than absolutely necessary, it adds another layer of abstraction between the user and the file he wants to open.

OS X is, indeed, very intelligent, but it still cannot read even my feeble mind, perhaps because so much of it is gone?! [blush] [lol]

As for keeping the old version. Who said the new one was perfect? Who said the new one would not have a problem not discovered during it's development and testing? Why throw away what was working perfectly just prior to getting the new version. Thanks, but no thanks, I've done enough beta testing to not rush to the trash can with any old version just because a new one was installed. I usually simply zip the old one and keep it for a few months/years. Nor do I download/update anything the hour/day/week it becomes available! Call me paranoid if you want, but remember, these are human made products and humans are well known for making misteakz! [coffee]

Point well taken about the older version. I have had more than a few experiences with upgrade inversions as well.

When WeatherCat 2.0 came available, I wanted to keep the previous version, but they both had the same name. After pondering the significance of the issue for what seemed like a long time (maybe two sips of coffee), I decided to try renaming the folder to WeatherCat-2. Everything still worked just like before, so I left it that way. Now with every update, I open the freshly downloaded and newly unpacked folder, and copy the contents to my WeatherCat-2 folder; dock icon unaffected.

Note that eventually, I trashed the earlier version. I've got enough clutter around here with my other mindless projects. Want or need a Presto FryDaddy?

You are much better at figuring out a way to 'fool mother nature[Apple]'. Putting the old stuff in another directory is much better than doing that with the new versions. When I finally went back to the 'correct' way, I had to edit all the paths in the WC prefs! [banghead] Of course, the Dock icon problem was also of my own doing. I seldom use the Dock and just "assumed" the 'cat' in there was the one I needed. This iz awlredy meye thurd erer of thee yeer! [blush]
