We received 2 inches of unforecast (a new word I made up) snow this morning, with the next storm Monday calling for 5-8 inches. If the NOAA 8-14 day outlook is right, we could be done for March after Monday. Where we live, we get a much more accurate 7 day forecast from WU than from NOAA but NOAA has a much longer range model than WU's 10-day outlook.

Speaking of 'rivers', we have one above us and one on the surface near us. The higher one is flowing north, the lower one south. Not much movement in the other two directions. That good for the lower river, not so much for the upper one. [rolleyes2] [rainyluck]

Northern California is about to be put directly in the cross-hairs of another so-called atmospheric river condition.

This must be the river that Might hit Colorado early next week.  Last several storms a total bust  [sweat2]  I think for a good river in Colorado we need a zonal flow which appears not to be the case here.  Storms just too far north.

For the past 12 hours (That's as far back as I looked. It may be longer), the storm front has been training in the same place across the Texas Gulf coast, Central Louisiana, Central and SE Arkansas, West Mississippi, West Tennessee and Western Kentucky. I'm right on the edge of the backside of it and have measured 1.45" of rain (36.83mm), most of that as it passed through here rather quickly. Forecast is for 4 more days with about 2 more inches here.

I feel for those just under the brunt of the storm, though. There's bound to be flooding across Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi. I've never seen it do like this before, but then I've only been a weather watcher for a few years.

5.97 inches in the last two days. I think the last time a storm stagnated like this was during the '27 flood! Of course, it was much longer and more wide-spread. Seems like the storm is trying to move the Mighty Muddy back upstream! It's also completely filling my pages with Alerts from NWS, six different alerts. Even stranger, someone at NWS has discovered that the Caps Lock key can be released; the last two warnings actually have normal capitalizations! Or maybe they just got hoarse from all the 'SHOUTING'! :P

Mid-range outlooks waffling (Re: Looking for wetter weather?)

Dear Blick, X-Air, HantaYo, Herb, and WeatherCat climate watchers,

Until now I never made it a point to check the 6-10, and 8-14 day forecasts of the Climate Prediction Center on a daily basis, but that may change after today.  Yesterday, the 8-14 day forecast for northern California was much below normal rainfall, today it is equal chance.  That's a huge change in just one day.  I don't know how they come up with these values, but clearly the much more volatile than I had imagined.

Unfortunately, the below normal forecast remains steady for the northern 1/3 of the west.  Also, it is expected to be above normal in the south starting around Texas and moving east.  So you guys drowning in the present rain better keep your bilge pumps going at full power!

Dear Western US drought watchers,

We are getting a bit of rain here in Orinda, but definitely just a few drops.  We were hoping to get 0.15" but the storm is almost over and thus far we have only 0.03".  We are supposed to be on the tail end of two more storms with similar characteristics, so I'll have to start watering sometime next week.

The NWS - Climate Predication Center is once more predicting much below normal rainfall for the next 6-10 days for the extreme west and below normal for the next 8-14 days for most of the west.  However, the one month and three month outlooks remain above normal.

Such are the limitations of those who read the climate tea leaves, . . . . .
