No WC folder in Library/Application Support
« on: October 25, 2015, 10:29:50 PM »
Hi.

I am trying very unsuccessfully to create a banner. I have followed the directions in the manual and in the Banner Generator. Using BG, I have created a banner but I do not believe it is saving it anywhere on my hard drive. It is always there when I reopen BG but doing a search of my hard drive for WeatherCatBanner.jpg does not work. I noticed that a WeatherCat folder does not appear in my user settings under Library/Application Support as discussed in the manual. Doesn't the software install a folder there for uploading to the web?

Also, I would like to have the banner appear just in my signature on this forum. Can that happen straight from my hard drive or does it first need to be uploaded to a website (which I have not yet created)? If it is possible, what code do I need to create in my signature file to make it happen?

Many thanks! I greatly appreciate your help.

Cheers,

John

Dear John and WeatherCat troubleshooters,

I noticed that a WeatherCat folder does not appear in my user settings under Library/Application Support as discussed in the manual. Doesn't the software install a folder there for uploading to the web?

You may be having problems viewing the folder.  Apple has become extremely patronizing when it comes to allowing users access to application data.  Which version of OS X are you using?  There are probably special instructions to revealing the folder.  If WeatherCat wasn't writing data, it would stop running immediately.

Also, I would like to have the banner appear just in my signature on this forum. Can that happen straight from my hard drive or does it first need to be uploaded to a website (which I have not yet created)?

Unfortunately, you do need to upload the banner to some sort of web server so that it can be viewed.  You could implement a banner without going through all the trouble of putting up a complete website, but you would at least need to decide on a web hosting provider.  If you intend to have a website, you might go ahead and purchase such a service and simply set up the banner for now and learn how to do a complete website later.

If you don't know anything about web hosting providers, you might start a new thread asking the WeatherCat community which companies they use.  I'm sure there is some variety in services used by WeatherCat users.

Cheers, Edouard

Hi, Edouard!

Thanks for your quick response. I'm currently running 10.10.5.

I do have other websites that a former employee produced for me?one for work and another for the farm. I'll ask him about getting a page set up so I can load the banner and the simple webpage while I learn how to do this myself.

Cheers,

John

Beekpr, I'm assuming you already understand that these directories will be in your User/Library/Application Support path, not in /Library/Application Support.

However, if you do not have WC set up to create or support a web site, it may not have actually created any on the new directories that it uses. Do you have anything checked in the WC Prefs for On-Line/Simple or Custom Web sections?

BTW, I haven't installed El Capitan either, but access the user Library has not changed there, as far as I know. You can use the "Go" menu in Finder. That seems a waste of time and effort to me, if you do it often, but some folks seem to like it. I'd suggest, simply dragging your user Library into the Finder Sidebar, once you get it displayed (using Finder or Terminal). It will then reside there, at least until Apple tries to stop that. ;)
