The store I bought the VP2 from in early 2009 has changed ownership and they no longer carry any VP2 spares in stock. A replacement anemometer is something they'd have to order. They are going to prepare a quote for me but said it would be in the region of ?200 or more.
Have you contacted John at Prodata ? He may have a Davis test cable for hire. If you do end up needing a new anemometer costs ?169 with free P+P, still a fortune but better than ?200 plus. He can be found at: http://shop.weatherstations.co.uk/davis-spare-parts-86-c.asp
Davis UK agent is McMurdo in Portsmouth, they will have test cables, I would give them a ring on 023 9262 3900 and see if they will send one out on hire.

Thanks for the info and sorry to hi-jack this thread!
I actually made a mistake after checking the receipt - the dealer who sold me the station (WeatherShop.co.uk) still exist and haven't changed to my knowledge. So I've contacted them today in case they have any knowledge of the anemometer diagnostic cable Davis told me about. I was confusing them with the company I bought a maintenance kit from last time (which comprised of a new battery, hex key, rain gauge cover and something else I can't remember). I'll contact ProData or McMurdo next to see if they can offer me anything.
I serviced the anemometer at the weekend. I took it down, dismantled it, blew some compressed air inside to get rid of the cobwebs and a few puffs of WD-40 on the spindle. Then reassembled it again and put it back up on the pole. But there was no change. Still zero for the wind speed.
I'll see how far I get with diagnostic cable.
