Anybody subscribe to a web-based weather data service?
« on: September 27, 2013, 10:45:48 PM »
Dear WeatherCat fans,

I'm wondering if there is a real benefit to paying for a service like the Andrew Revering's EuroWx.  He wants $6.95 a month or $83.40 a year.  It seems a bit steep for what it is.  There are other services like AccuWeather Premium.

https://wwwl.accuweather.com/premium_forecast_benefits.php

They want $80 a year for this and it has a lot more features.  It includes 15,000 maps from 4 forecast models: GFS (AVN, MRF) Model, NAM (ETA) Model, RUC Model,  DGEX Model, and NDFD Model.  Alas, it does not include the ECMWF model that seems to have an edge these days.   Another thing it has is 15 years of historical data that could be useful in calibrating things like what should an average rainfall year really look like at my station.

Has anybody subscribed to any of these premium services?  Is it worth the money really?  Is there any opinion on these products from other personal weather station owners that would be interesting to me?

Opinions solicited!!

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

I sometimes subscribe to Netweather for a month or two ( http://www.netweather.tv )- they do monthly subs so when the weather gets interesting it's quite cheap to get better data than they provide for free.

Howdy Stu and WeatherCat fans,

Thanks of the suggestion.  AccuWeather can also be joined on a monthly basis so I could also play your trick of say only subscribing during the winter months.  In Northern California, that's about the only period where the weather could really hurt you.

Given how busy I am at the moment, I guess I'll hold off on the EuroWx web subscription for now.  Perhaps the situation will change by the time I have more time for weather related things.
