Continuing "hardware" problems messages from Weathercat
« on: August 05, 2013, 09:40:05 PM »
Hi,
I continue to get hardware problem messages from Weathercat and I need help tracking it down.
The same hardware set-up, USB 1, Keyspan 2 port adapter, serial plug with phone type adapter
plug and cord (from Davis), work without a hitch on my old iBook with LWC 2. I have installed the newest serial
adapter update for my iMac 10.6.8 . Still I get kernel panics on occasion, and when I start Weathercat
up in the morning (I shutdown overnight) it takes awhile to download data and I get the beach ball
until it finishes.  I have a Monitor 2.
Does anyone have any ideas on this?

Dongle software driver probably buggy. (Re: "hardware" problems)

Dear Cabut and WeatherCat fans,

I continue to get hardware problem messages from Weathercat and I need help tracking it down.

. . . . .

Does anyone have any ideas on this?

Unfortunately the most obvious explanation is that the software driver for the Keyspan is buggy or not properly supporting your dongle and that is causing the problems.  You might try an earlier version of the software driver (if you can find one) and see if it is more stable.

If that doesn't work, perhaps you should consider getting a newer serial to USB dongle which has better software support.  I don't know much about these things but perhaps another WeatherCat forum member can make a recommendation.  If I recall correctly, it isn't a very large expense so that might be a more positive way to get your station communicating reliably with WeatherCat.

Sorry to not have anything more to suggest.

Cheers, Edouard

Thanks Edouard, I hadn't thought of the software. Ever since I have installed the new driver I get a " Network set-up" message on my iMac at start up , which I just cancel, as it doesn't seem to apply to the WeatherCat application.
