Disable Webcam Uploads At Night
« on: November 18, 2012, 06:16:11 PM »
Don't know if someone's out here to have the wish to manually override the option of "Disable Webcam Uploads At Night" in the meaning of:
"last upload at xx:xx" to tell WeatherCat: please upload pictures until 16:30 and then restart uploads on the next day at 06:30.
I have told this wish in the early development days to Trixology, maybe it was lost in space. So I thought I pull this idea into the "Feature Requests" one more time.  :)
Cheers, Reinhard

Reinhard,

If you want to implement this feature now, you can use an application called EvoCam from Evological Software. It has a schedule option to only save images during daylight hours. I use EvoCam to capture and save my image locally, then use WeatherCat to overprint the image with current conditions and upload it to my web site. You can test it free for some period of time. I'm still using the 3.7.5 version (which can still be downloaded) because version 4 took away some features and was harder to set up.

It would be nice if WeatherCat had this feature built in, but until it does, this is a $30 option.

Hi Steve,
thanks for pointing me in this direction. I know about EvoCam but for what reason ever I do not want to run it parallel to WeatherCat. WeatherCat has this feature already build in, the only thing is that it is not possible to schedule the time-out: Preferences - Webcam - Capture Options. So maybe we will get another Capture Option for scheduling in future releases.  [computer]

So, the way it works at the moment (if 'Disable Webcam Uploads At Night' is ticked) is the uploads (images/movies) are disabled approx. 45 minutes after sunset and re-enabled about 45 minutes before sunrise (so you don't miss the nice sunrise/sunset shots).

If I understand correctly Reinhard, you want to be able to manually set the start and end of the camera upload 'on' time? (doesn't this mean you'll be continually adjusting them throughout the year?) Or do you want to adjust the 45 minutes pre-sunrise/post sunset times?

Stu, for my purposes it would be enough to be able to adjust the 45 min times, seperately for sunset and sunrise. So the last picture uploaded should not show only pure night, even so the first picture uploaded. If it is easier for you to let us manually set the start & end of upload time, I would be happy, too. Both ways lead to the goal, the manually set with more manual work for the user...  ;)

OK, that makes sense - added to the todo list, provisionally slated for the 1.2 development.

Thanks for the suggestion Reinhard  [tup]

Oops, sorry, I didn't even know that was there. Or it I did, I forgot. I got started running EvoCam before WeatherCat and just kept using it. Plus I have two cameras running, so one gets sent from EvoCam through WeatherCat, and the second directly to the web site.

Sorry for the confusion,
Steve

Another feature I thought about that fits in this category:
Is it possible to overlay the last uploaded picture with current conditions - not the current conditions from the Current Conditions Calculator but the actual conditions and time that is overlaid during daytime. So in this case whatever picture is displayed it shows the actual conditions. The benefit would be that the visitor of a homepage could see a picture NOT only black BUT overlaid with actual data.
Cheers,
Reinhard

Hi Reinhard,
Sorry, missed this earlier.

If I understand correctly, upload the very last image before we stopped uploading but with the current conditions (i.e. the conditions throughout the night) overlaid? So although the image doesn't change, the overlay does?

Yes, that's it! At the moment if disable uploads is ticked and overlay is turned on, the whole night (now for more than 12 hours) "old" weather data are displayed as overlay. So the last uploaded picture should be the dummy, but the overlay should be up to date.

You may ask why I won't enable uploads during the night, because then I would have accurate data. The answer is a simple one: I do not want to have a very black picture - the last uploaded one shows a bit of an impression of the area, the night shows only black...

Would be nice if this one will be a feature in the future.  :)

Cheers,
Reinhard
