Wildly inaccurate rainfall readings Davis VP2
« on: July 18, 2021, 10:40:53 AM »
My 2009 vintage Vantage Pro2 has been working just fine until the last couple of days.

Been a wintery couple of days here in Adelaide SA.

On Thursday 15 July 2021, recorded 17.6 mm rain. Then things went haywire... Friday was 510 mm, Saturday 1040 mm and Sunday so far 967 mm.

I have checked that nothing is blocking the tipping mechanism in the rain gauge.

Could the reed switch or something be on it's last legs?.

I would go with that.  You and me have reed switches and they do wear out.  I am guessing that is why Davis came up with their single pan unit to get around that problem.

Check mechanism? (Re: Wildly inaccurate rainfall readings Davis VP2)

Dear Ryan, Weatheraardvark, and WeatherCat station caregivers,

My 2009 vintage Vantage Pro2 has been working just fine until the last couple of days.

12 year old stations can start to have worn out components, so it could be a hardware issue as Weatheraardvark suggests.

. . . . . .

Is your rain gauge accessible enough that you can go outside when it is making these exaggerated readings and see (or more likely listen) for anything out of whack?  I assume that you are seeing the same rainfall reports on your console so it has to an issue with the Vantage Pro hardware - correct?

Let us know if you uncover anything else.

Cheers, Edouard
