New wiki write-up: how to change Davis transmitter IDs
« on: October 09, 2014, 11:45:03 PM »
Dear WeatherCat Davis owners,

As promised I have just put up my description of how to change the transmitter IDs of your Davis instruments should you run into a conflict.  Here is the write-up on the Wiki:

http://wiki.trixology.com/index.php/How_to_change_the_station_transmitter_IDs_for_Davis_Vantage_Pro-2_hardware

It is linked to the Davis hardware page.

I wrote it up a bit quickly, so if anyone finds typos please either let me know or just go ahead an correct them yourself on the wiki.

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Thanks for your usual careful attention to detail on this and the photos are great.

I have one question. Do you have any idea what the transmitting range is?

I have a neighbour with a VP2 but I've never had any interference with his unit. He is about 400 yards away through the trees.

Davis range: 200-1000 feet. (Re: change Davis transmitter IDs)

Hi Blick and WeatherCat Davis owners,

I have one question. Do you have any idea what the transmitting range is?

Well, according to the Davis ISS manual (page-17: )

Quote
The range of the radio transmission depends on several factors. Try to position the transmitter and the receiver as close as possible for best results.
Typical maximum ranges include:

  • Line of sight: 1000' (300 m).
  • Under most conditions: 200 - 400' (60 - 120 m).
Other range and transmission considerations include:
  • Range may be reduced by walls, ceilings, trees, foliage, a metal roof or other largemetal structures or objects such as aluminum siding, metal ducts, and metal appliances, such as refrigerators, televisions, heaters, or air conditioners.
  • Frequency interferers also reduce transmission distance. Cordless phones (900 Mhz) are a common example of frequency interference.
  • Transmission between wireless units may be obscured by something unidentifiable, or by some obstacle that can?t be worked around.
  • For best results, orient the ISS antenna and the console antenna so that the orientation and angles of the antennas are parallel to each other.

Since you seem beyond the ranges you are probably okay.  However, you might have a situation similar to mine where "just the correct conditions" happen so that these two stations "cross wires."  Since my problems probably were caused by my Weather Envoy starting to fail, I'm not sure what to tell you.  At least if you decide to change the transmitter ID, you'll know a lot better about how to go about it than I did!

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

I keep forgetting to look in the manual first. :) Thanks for your patience and your detailed reply.
