The kind of buck you won't want to look in the eyes!!
« on: October 15, 2014, 09:38:05 PM »
Dear WeatherCat nature lovers,

Yesterday afternoon I was doing the chores when I noticed a buck that was a few years old laying on the wood chips we have in front of our back door.  Amazingly the critter just stayed there.  Eventually, I was curious enough that I grabbed my camera and took a few photos straight through the back door.  Here is the first:

Of course the buck heard the camera take the first photo so it looked:

I've never looked a buck straight in the eyes before and . . . . honestly I don't know if I ever want to do it again!!

Enjoy!

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

In my ongoing effort to be like Edouard when I grow up, and trying to keep up with him, I took this photo through an upstairs window 10 minutes ago. I couldn't get as close as he was to my subject and I was in such a hurry that the quality of the photo is not as good as his, but given my limitations and the fact that I am not him, I did the best I could under the circumstances.

20 minutes later, I was talking on the phone, looked out the window and saw a moose. Grabbed my 55-250 mm lens and managed to get his shot as she took off on a dead run up through the Aspen.

iPhone pics taken last fall through a window of the shed behind my house where I keep my lawn tractor and all the assorted implements and gardening tools. Won't be long before I'll be pulling off the mower and replacing it with the snow blower.

A bit of interesting weather-related folklore, supposedly the pattern inside the seeds of a native eastern U.S. persimmon tree (diospyros virginiana) predicts what the upcoming winter will be like: spoon pattern = more than normal snowfall, fork pattern = mild winter and good hunting, knife pattern = colder than normal with cutting winds.

And you guessed it, folks manning the booths at a local farmer's market are reporting nearly 100% spoon patterns when they cut open this fall's persimmon seeds with a sharp knife.

Dear Blick, Felix and WeatherCat nature observers,

Thanks for the contributions of a few more "bucks" . . . . even if they aren't of this variety!

Since many parts of the western United States are suffering from drought, the rutting season may be particularly aggressive and thus potentially hazardous to both the deer and any innocent bystanders in the proximity to the "action."

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]
