Additional Services
« on: June 01, 2024, 05:46:01 PM »
Hello - Additional Services, are they coming back in time or are they on the long way. It is really not amusing to build a workaround for every this and that...
• WeatherCat V330 B175
• SFPT not implemented - no workaround
• FTPS not working properly with my ISP - workaround using a time scaled Transmit/Automator upload program
• AWEKAS uploads only possible with an old workaround using a realtime txt file
• Weathercloud uploads - no workaround
etc.
Sorry to say, but that all is a bit ... frustrating. I realy love WeatherCat and I want to stay on this platform. But if it is not developed any more, I have to look out for alternatives.
Reinhard

Dear Reinhard and WeatherCat faithful,

I wish I had something more encouraging to offer, but I'm just barely hanging in there myself at the moment.

Hello - Additional Services, are they coming back in time or are they on the long way. It is really not amusing to build a workaround for every this and that...
. . .
• AWEKAS uploads only possible with an old workaround using a realtime txt file
• Weathercloud uploads - no workaround
. . .

I'm not sure why my installation would be different, but I seem to be able to upload to AWEKAS and WeatherCloud.

Here is the AWEKAS link for my weather station:

https://www.awekas.at/en/instrument.php?id=8818&tempeh=c

Here is the equivalent link for WeatherCloud:

https://app.weathercloud.net/d0029378794

Is anyone else having problems uploading to these two services?

Edouard

Dear Edouard, I am really familiar with WeatherCat because I am using it since the program was born as LWC...

What I want to say with my post is, that WeatherCat isn't capable of latest Apple computers and latest Mac operating systems. On my Mac mini M2 WCV320 is uploading to AWEKAS, WeatherCloud, etc. but is NOT uploading to my webspace because it is not able to use FTPS correct, see another thread here. On the other hand WCV330B175 has rudimental functions to upload to my webspace (at least the txt files for Live Gauges [Mark Crossley] and a makeshift txt file for AWEKAS) so that I can feed those two services, but all other uploads are still not able because of the lack of full supporting SFTP and/or FTPS. For those uploads I have build a really not easy upload via Transmit and LingonX. Additional there is no way in V330B175 to feed additional services because there are only white tiles as placeholders for "things to come".
So I have the choice between the latest official V320 or the latest V330 test build - both of them not fully capable M2 computers and/or modern requirements of ISPs. The last thing I want to do is to buy an old Mac machine running an old operating system and change to an ISP that uses only FTP to upload, thats not the future.

So far, the "not statement" from Stu to all those (and other) threads within the forum: It's a bit - frustrating... isn't it?  :-[

Sadly, we have a common understanding. (Re: Additional Services)

Not to disagree with you at all, but I wasn't sure which version of WeatherCat you were using.  My understanding was that indeed V3.20 was fully functional with the exception of the secure FTP issues you mentioned.  While not as fast as it could be, I thought V3.20 nonetheless ran without any issues unique to the new Apple M series processors.

I wish I had something more encouraging to offer in terms of the future of WeatherCat.  It seems painfully clear that the entire information technology industry is now very much addicted to overworking their employees and Stu is sadly caught up in that reality. Effectively his "hobby" of WeatherCat has very little free time to be enjoyed.  As a result, Stu is suffering in his own way from the neglect of WeatherCat.

Nonetheless, our choices are difficult at best.  As far as I know, all the competitors to WeatherCat on the Mac are no longer supported.  Only Stu is even trying to keep WeatherCat alive.  Each of us has to make a decision for ourselves as to what to do.

I run WeatherCat version 3.20 on a Mac Mini M2 running Sonoma with all the latest updates, connected to a Davis Vantage Pro 2 with a USB data logger and it runs perfectly.

I don't use it to upload additional services so I can't comment on that.

My hosting company is IONOS and they no longer support simple FTP uploads so I have got round that by using an FTP server on the same Mac mini and WeatherCat uploads to it.

This is the one I use - https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/ftp-server/id987045856?mt=12

I then use rsync called by a cron job to upload to my website.

Rather a round about way but it worse perfectly.

WeeWX ( https://weewx.com ) and CumulusMX V4 ( https://cumulus.hosiene.co.uk ) also both happily run on the same Mac mini M2

Thanks Edouard and wx-watch for your inputs.

Got running CumulusWX4 running on another Mac since today to test it with its built-in WeatherStation-Dummy.

Thanks again, Reinhard

I suggest to test WeeWX with it’s simulator mode.
There is also import tool to import history data from WeatherCat.
I feel sad that WeatherCat development is really slow, but I also understund that sometimes there are times when time for hobby project’s is very limited.

Thanks iccb for your input, too - much appreciated!

wx-watch, you are running WeatherCat, WeeWX and Cumulus MX at the same time on the same Mac? Sounds very interesting!  8)

WeeWX can run same time on same machine as WeatherCat, actually you can run multiple instances of WeeWX on same time.
I think CumulusMX can be running also same time same machine.
Of course Davis Vantage can ne used only one software at time.

Yes indeed - I have WeeWX, three instances of CumulusMX V4 and WeatherCat all running on the same M2 Mac Mini

May I ask you which version of WeatherCat you are using? V330B175 isn't receiving data while running CMX here on my Mac mini M2.  ???

Update: Maybe your connection to Davis VP Pro is not via SiLab USB?
