Davis Vantage Pro 2 rain gauge setup inch/mm
« on: November 03, 2021, 10:52:52 AM »
I have a doubt: I have a Davis Vantage Pro 2 (wired) with standard (inches) rain collector tipping bucket. Davis console is configured with 0.01 inch. What values read and store WeatherCat configured in mm as unit for precipation?

Do I need to change the adapter for tipping bucket with the one for metric measurements (mm) and change console to 0.2 mm or WeatherCat read the value in inch and switch to mm automatically?

Thanks.

WeatherCat depends on Console. (Re: Vantage Pro 2 rain gauge setup inch/mm))

Dear casabastiano and WeatherCat troubleshooters,

That's a good question for which there isn't an obvious answer.  Checking the WeatherCat manual there is no configuration settings related to units whatsoever.  WeatherCat stores all data in metric units internally and converts to English units for those who prefer that.  I believe that WeatherCat expects data from the Davis console in a particular set of units and if your console is configured correctly, everything will work correctly.  I cannot be sure, but it is unlikely that the Davis hardware uses multiple units.  It wouldn't surprise me if the Davis consoles also store all data in metric and converts as required.

I hope that's some comfort to your concerns.

Cheers, Edouard

Thanks Edouard, your reply help me, but I need to go deeper:

This is not completely true.
From pag. 75 of WeatherCat Manual:
"Virtual VP. The WeatherLink IP driver can be used with Virtual VP. Normally WeatherCat reads the rain bucket resolution direct from the hardware, but it appears Virtual VP does not pass this information through (WeatherCat defaults to 0.2mm). However, it's possible to force the rain bucket resolution to 0.01" via a hidden preference as follows: Open a terminal window and enter the following command and hit the return key:
      defaults write com.trixology.weathercat VantageRainCollectorOverrideToInches YES
This will force the WLIP to set the rain collector to 0.01" resolution. To revert back to auto-detect enter:
      defaults write com.trixology.weathercat VantageRainCollectorOverrideToInches NO
This command only needs to be entered once - it isn't necessary to enter it every time WeatherCat is launched."

OK, this is related to Virtual VP that is not my case, but I'd like to be sure that WeatherCat reads the correct rain value. If it reads the rain bucket resolution direct from the hardware as written in the manual, my doubt persist.
Does anyone have a precise idea of how the rain data is read if the console is configured with 0.01 inch and where this data is converted in mm (in the console or in WeatherCat?)
