Temporary "toggle" for Startup/Shutdown actions?
« on: April 27, 2012, 09:53:32 PM »
Howdy Stu and WeatherCat fans,  [cat]

I just needed to restart WeatherCat for a quick check and that means stopping and starting all my AppleScripts.  This is especially a pain because I need to allocate a gap between starting each one.  While doing this I wondered to myself why I haven't automated this and the answer came to me: "what happens if I need to start and stop WeatherCat without doing my normal operations" (say for testing or because one script is broken.)

It occurred to me that it might be nice to have an override system for the startup and shutdown scripts of WeatherCat.  I don't know how hard it would be, but something like holding down the shift (or other) key while starting or stopping would disable whatever script would be run.

Not sure how to do this, but being able to avoid launching what is now 6 AppleScripts could be really handy at times.

So, here is the suggestion!  [bounce]

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Hi Edouard
I use an Automator Quit Application app to quit the apps at shut down then use delayed launcher to start them up after WC starts up but I'm sure Stu has something better that can do it more efficient than this but it works

Hi Randall and WeatherCat AppleScript folks,

I use an Automator Quit Application app to quit the apps at shut down then use delayed launcher to start them up after WC starts up but I'm sure Stu has something better that can do it more efficient than this but it works

Actually the problem isn't the normal situation.  I could write two AppleScripts in 1/2 hour that would work perfectly for starting and stopping the AppleScripts.  The trouble comes when I'm debugging something or otherwise tinkering and I don't want a "normal" shutdown sequence.  Because that happens often enough for me, I'd rather do this process by hand.  However, that's really dumb in some respects and unfair to you'all.  It would be really handy to have the launching and quitting AppleScripts written.

Since I should stop fussin' with the main AppleScripts, I'll try to get the startup and shutdown Applescripts written.  I can at least run them "by-hand" here.  Folks who aren't messing up with these scripts could then use them as Stu intended, by using WeatherCat to control the collection and spare you one headache.

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]
