Monitor 2 wind direction is reversed
« on: April 08, 2016, 02:11:17 AM »
Hi,

Is there a simple way to correct the wind direction on my Davis Monitor 2?
Wind from the south is reading as coming from the north.

Thanks,

Cabut

Is the support arm that holds the anemometer pointed to magnetic north?
A clear conscience is a great pillow.

Is console correct? (Re: Monitor 2 wind direction is reversed)

Dear Cabut, dfw, and WeatherCat troubleshooters,

Is there a simple way to correct the wind direction on my Davis Monitor 2?

Admittedly a silly question but just to be 100% on the same page.  So the wind direction on the console is correct, but WeatherCat is 180% off?

Cheers, Edouard

Hi,

No the console is reading the same as the wind direction which is the opposite of the true wind direction. I am about 15 miles from the Mexican border. At this time of the year winds are predominately from the south..I've sampled a few locations nearby and the winds are southerly on these stations. Mine reads north!

!. As the song said, "How long has this been going on"? :)

2. Please confirm or deny that other directions are 180? off (East wind reported as West and vice versa). There is a note in the Davis installation documents that speaks of a "stuck" indication of North. Please confirm that yours is reporting other directions or not.

3. Can you easily reach your anemometer? If you can, it might be worth testing to see what happens if you can turn the mount 180? or even 90?.

Thanks!
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system

1.Quite a long time I think. I only noticed it when I began comparing my stations wind direction to othe stations in the area recently.

2. Yes directions are all off 180 degrees.

3. No, not easily, but I will if that is the only route to correct this.

Thanks,
Cabut

You asked if there was an "easy" way. Although I still think you should absolutely ensure that the anemometer arm is pointing TRUE north (you'll have to make the correction from mag north when using a compass), the console can be calibrated as can WeatherCat. Now I will caveat that by saying I *assume* they both will accept a calibration correction of 180? but I've never had a need to try it.

http://www.davisnet.com/product_documents/weather/manuals/07395-234_IM_06312.pdf

Page 27:

Calibrate Wind Direction Reading If the anemometer arm cannot be mounted pointing to true north, use this procedure to correct the wind direction console reading.

1. Check the current direction of the wind vane on the anemometer. Compare it to the wind direction reading on the console.
2. Press WIND as necessary to display the wind direction in degrees.
3. Press and release 2ND, then press and hold SET.
4. The wind direction variable will begin to blink.
5. Continue holding the key until the CAL message appears in the ticker. The ticker displays the current wind direction calibration value.
6. Press the < and > keys to select digits in the anemometer?s current reading.
7. Press the + and - keys to add/subtract from the anemometer reading.
8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 until you have entered the offset value from Step 1. 9. Press DONE to exit calibration.

For WeatherCat, in the Table of Contents, look up:

Preferences-- Misc 2 (Set Calibration Data). Typically in the page 160s range depending upon which version of the User Manual you are consulting.

Cabut, what version of firmware is in that 15 y/o Davis console?

I don't suppose by chance you have a Windows partition on your iMac do you?
